Verify your credentials meet specialty occupation
USCIS requires a DDS or DMD plus a completed periodontics residency for H-1B approval. Confirm your foreign dental credentials are evaluated by a recognized credentialing body before an employer files your petition.
Target cap-exempt employers to skip the lottery
University dental schools, nonprofit research hospitals, and certain affiliated clinics are cap-exempt, meaning they can file an H-1B petition any time of year without entering the April lottery. Prioritize these when your timeline is tight.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by periodontics or oral health occupation codes to see which dental groups and health systems have active DOL Labor Condition Application filings. That history confirms an employer has sponsored H-1B workers for comparable roles before.
Benchmark the prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and metro area. Your offered salary must meet at least the applicable level or USCIS will issue a wage-compliance deficiency.
Ask employers about state dental board timelines
Several states require periodontal specialty board certification or a specific license before you can practice independently. Confirm the employer's start date accounts for state licensing lead times, since a delayed license can complicate your H-1B status activation.
Request premium processing if your start date is firm
USCIS offers premium processing on I-129 petitions, which guarantees a decision within 15 business days. For periodontists joining a practice on a set contract date, premium processing eliminates the uncertainty of standard adjudication timelines.
H-1B Visa Periodontist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a periodontist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Periodontics requires a DDS or DMD followed by a three-year accredited residency in periodontics, meeting USCIS's requirement that the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific specialty. The specialized postdoctoral training distinguishes it from general dentistry and satisfies the specialty occupation definition.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for periodontists?
University dental schools, academic medical centers, Veterans Affairs dental clinics, and large group dental practices are the most active H-1B sponsors for periodontists. VA facilities and university-affiliated clinics are often cap-exempt, which means they can file petitions outside the annual lottery window. Search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified LCA filing history in periodontics.
What happens to my H-1B status if I leave a sponsoring dental practice?
Your H-1B is tied to the sponsoring employer. If you leave, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer willing to file an H-1B transfer petition. The transfer can be filed under H-1B portability rules once you've worked for the original employer for at least 180 days, letting you start the new role before USCIS approves the petition.
Can a periodontics residency program sponsor an H-1B for international graduates?
Many accredited periodontics residency programs are affiliated with universities or nonprofit hospitals, making them cap-exempt H-1B sponsors. The program must classify the residency position as requiring at least a DDS or DMD, which periodontics programs do. Cap-exempt sponsors can file at any point in the year, so residents don't need to wait for the April lottery.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect periodontist job offers?
DOL requires the employer to pay at least the prevailing wage for the SOC code and geographic location listed on the Labor Condition Application. Periodontist wages vary significantly by metro area, and the LCA wage level must match the complexity of the role. You can verify applicable wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
