Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Clinical Psychiatrist
Verify your medical credentials match SOC requirements
USCIS evaluates psychiatry roles against the SOC 29-1223 classification. Confirm your medical degree, residency, and board eligibility documents align with that code before applying, since credential gaps trigger Requests for Evidence that delay your start date.
Target employers with J-1 waiver Conrad 30 slots
Many states allocate Conrad 30 J-1 waiver slots specifically for psychiatrists in Health Professional Shortage Areas. Employers who sponsor these waivers are also practiced H-1B filers, making them far more likely to move efficiently through your petition.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by psychiatry-related SOC codes on Migrate Mate to see which hospital systems and behavioral health employers have active DOL Labor Condition Application filings for your role, so you spend time on employers who already sponsor rather than guessing.
Request premium processing before your start date locks
Psychiatric group practices often set credentialing timelines months in advance. File USCIS Form I-907 for premium processing once the I-129 is ready, cutting the adjudication window to 15 business days and protecting your credentialing and malpractice onboarding schedule.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search levels
Your employer's LCA must certify a prevailing wage at DOL Level I through IV. Pull the OFLC Wage Search for SOC 29-1223 in your metro area before negotiating, so you know whether the offer clears the certified wage floor for your experience tier.
Clarify moonlighting restrictions with your petitioning employer
H-1B status ties your authorized work to the petitioning employer's LCA. Taking on-call shifts or telemedicine contracts outside that employer requires a concurrent H-1B petition, which many psychiatric locum arrangements skip and USCIS audits closely.

Find Clinical Psychiatrist JobsClinical Psychiatrist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Psychiatrist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Psychiatry requires an M.D. or D.O., completion of a residency in psychiatry, and board certification or eligibility, which meets USCIS's definition of a specialty occupation requiring a specific bachelor's-level-or-higher degree in a directly related field. Hospital systems and outpatient psychiatric groups routinely file H-1B petitions under SOC code 29-1223 without difficulty.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Psychiatrists?
Academic medical centers, large hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and behavioral health organizations account for the majority of H-1B LCA filings for psychiatrists. These employers have established immigration infrastructure and file consistently. You can browse employers with verified LCA filing history for psychiatry roles on Migrate Mate before submitting applications.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect Clinical Psychiatrists?
Cap-exempt employers, including nonprofit hospitals, academic medical centers, and federally funded research institutions, can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. If your employer is cap-subject, your petition enters the USCIS lottery each April for the following fiscal year. Many psychiatric employers are cap-exempt, so confirm that status early in your job search.
Can a Clinical Psychiatrist hold H-1B status and a J-1 waiver simultaneously?
Not simultaneously, but sequentially. A J-1 waiver under the Conrad 30 program commits you to three years of service in an underserved area and typically converts to H-1B status after that obligation is fulfilled. Some employers sponsor the H-1B from day one if they're already cap-exempt, bypassing the J-1 route entirely. Confirm which pathway your prospective employer supports before signing a contract.
What happens to H-1B status if a Clinical Psychiatrist changes employers mid-petition?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you transfer to a new employer after your petition has been pending for 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For psychiatrists, a move between inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings generally qualifies. Your new employer must file a new LCA and an amended I-129 before you begin work at the new facility.
