Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician
Confirm your board eligibility documentation early
H-1B petitions for physiatrists require proof of specialty training. Have your ECFMG certificate, residency completion letter, and PM&R board eligibility documentation organized before employers begin the LCA filing process.
Target rehabilitation hospital systems over private practices
Inpatient rehabilitation facilities and academic medical centers file H-1B petitions far more consistently than private physiatry practices, which often lack the HR infrastructure to sponsor. Focus your search on systems with dedicated credentialing and immigration teams.
Search verified H-1B sponsor history on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter PM&R physician roles by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This surfaces sponsors with active physiatry hiring, saving you from outreach to practices unlikely to navigate the petition process.
Verify prevailing wage for your practice setting
PM&R prevailing wages differ significantly between inpatient rehab, outpatient clinics, and academic settings. Run your specific SOC code and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage so you can identify any wage-level gaps in early negotiations.
Ask employers about cap-exempt H-1B eligibility
Physiatrists employed by nonprofit hospitals affiliated with a university or research institution may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. Confirm the employer's affiliation status with USCIS criteria before assuming a lottery slot is required.
Align your credentialing and H-1B timelines carefully
State medical licensure and hospital credentialing for PM&R physicians can take three to six months. Coordinate with your employer so the H-1B petition is filed concurrently, not sequentially, to avoid gaps in your authorized start date.

Find Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician JobsPhysical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. PM&R positions require completion of a four-year residency and at minimum a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine degree, which satisfies USCIS specialty occupation standards. The theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge is clearly established for physiatrists, making H-1B eligibility straightforward for this role.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for physiatrists?
Inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, academic medical centers, VA facilities, and large multispecialty health systems are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for PM&R physicians. These employers have established immigration processes and dedicated HR teams. You can filter for employers with verified LCA filing history in physiatry-related roles directly on Migrate Mate.
Can a PM&R physician avoid the H-1B lottery through cap-exempt filing?
Possibly. If your employer is a nonprofit hospital or research institution that qualifies as a higher education affiliate under USCIS criteria, your petition may be filed outside the annual cap entirely. This is common at university hospital systems and teaching facilities. Confirm the employer's cap-exempt status before accepting an offer contingent on lottery selection.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to physiatrists with a supervisory or academic role?
DOL assigns prevailing wages by SOC code and wage level, with Level III and IV rates applying to experienced or supervisory roles. A PM&R physician with program directorship duties or faculty appointment may be classified at a higher wage level, which the employer must meet in the LCA certification. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check rates for your specific location and title.
What happens to H-1B status if a physiatrist switches from an inpatient rehab setting to an outpatient clinic within the same health system?
A material change in worksite location or job duties typically requires an amended H-1B petition and a new LCA before the change takes effect. Moving between care settings, even within one employer, can qualify as a material change if it affects your SOC code, wage level, or primary worksite. Notify your employer's immigration counsel before any role transition to avoid status violations.
