Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
H-1B approval hinges on your role requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Review the O*NET profile for Medical Office Assistants and match your degree field to the employer's posted job requirements before applying.
Target multi-site healthcare employers first
Independent clinics rarely file H-1B petitions. Focus on hospital systems, large medical groups, and academic medical centers, which have established immigration counsel and dedicated HR processes for sponsoring foreign national clinical support staff.
Search LCA filings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation, so you can see exactly which employers have filed LCAs for Medical Office Assistant roles and filter to active sponsors before sending a single application.
Confirm prevailing wage tier with OFLC Wage Search
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage meeting the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage so you can negotiate a salary your employer can legitimately certify.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Hospitals affiliated with a university or nonprofit research institution may qualify as cap-exempt employers, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely. Confirm this status during the interview process, not after you've accepted an offer.

Find Medical Office Assistant JobsMedical Office Assistant H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Office Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. USCIS requires the position to normally demand a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. If the job description specifies a degree in health administration, medical assisting, or a closely related discipline, the role can qualify. Generalized postings that accept any bachelor's degree, regardless of field, are more likely to receive a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Office Assistant jobs?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and multi-specialty group practices are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. Independent clinics and small private practices rarely have the legal infrastructure or budget to file petitions. You can use Migrate Mate to browse verified H-1B filing history by employer and identify healthcare organizations that have sponsored this occupation before.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Medical Office Assistant applicants?
Most applicants go through the standard annual H-1B cap, which includes a lottery when registrations exceed available slots. However, if your employer is a nonprofit hospital affiliated with a university or a qualifying research institution, it may be cap-exempt. Cap-exempt employers can file at any time of year without lottery exposure, which significantly changes your timeline and planning.
Can my employer pay less than the posted salary and still file an H-1B for my role?
No. The employer's Labor Condition Application must certify a wage equal to or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific occupation and work location. USCIS cross-checks LCA wage levels against the petition, and underpaying the prevailing wage is grounds for denial or later violation. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the applicable wage level for your metro area before the offer stage.
What happens to my H-1B status if I change employers within the same healthcare system?
A transfer to a different legal entity, even within the same parent organization, typically requires a new H-1B petition. Under AC21 portability rules, you can start work with a new employer once they file a non-frivolous petition, provided your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel whether your specific transfer triggers a new filing obligation.
