Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in General Pediatrician
Verify your medical credentials before applying
ECFMG certification is a prerequisite for H-1B sponsorship if you trained outside the U.S. Confirm your USMLE scores, residency completion documentation, and state medical license are current before any employer begins the I-129 filing process.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Hospitals affiliated with universities, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit research institutions can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure. Pediatric departments within these systems are your most direct path to a cap-exempt sponsorship offer.
Search H-1B sponsoring pediatric employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in pediatrics using Migrate Mate. This surfaces practices and health systems that have actively sponsored the role, not just those that say they're open to it.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for the General Pediatrician SOC code in your target metro before your offer conversation.
Confirm board certification requirements with each employer
Some hospital systems require ABP board certification or eligibility as a condition of H-1B sponsorship, independent of USCIS requirements. Ask HR explicitly whether board certification affects their timeline or willingness to file before you advance in any hiring process.
Understand USCIS timing if you're transitioning from J-1
J-1 physicians subject to the two-year home residency requirement must obtain a waiver before USCIS can approve an H-1B. Conrad 30 waivers through a state health agency are the most common path and often tie you to an underserved area for three years.

Find General Pediatrician JobsGeneral Pediatrician H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a General Pediatrician role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. General Pediatrician positions qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require at minimum a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent foreign degree, plus a valid state medical license. USCIS consistently recognizes physician roles as meeting the specialty occupation standard. Your employer will document this in the I-129 petition using your degree, residency completion, and licensure.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for General Pediatricians?
University-affiliated hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, children's hospitals, and large multispecialty medical groups are the most active H-1B sponsors for pediatricians. Many of these are cap-exempt, meaning they can file petitions at any time without lottery risk. You can identify employers with active H-1B filing history for pediatric roles directly on Migrate Mate.
What happens to my H-1B status if my pediatric employer loses its license or closes?
Your H-1B status is tied to your sponsoring employer. If that employer closes or loses its accreditation, your authorized status ends. USCIS allows a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer and file a new H-1B petition. Notify a new employer immediately, since they must file before the grace period expires for you to maintain lawful status.
Can I work at multiple pediatric locations under one H-1B petition?
Only if all locations are covered by the same approved petition and certified LCA. Each physical worksite where you'll provide services more than sporadically must be covered by a separate LCA certified for that location's prevailing wage. If your employer adds a new clinic or satellite office, they must amend the petition and file a new LCA before you begin working there.
Does a J-1 waiver affect my path to H-1B sponsorship as a pediatrician?
Yes, significantly. If you completed a J-1 residency or fellowship and are subject to the two-year home residency requirement, you cannot change to H-1B status until you obtain a waiver. Conrad 30 waivers are the primary route for physicians and typically require a three-year service commitment at a HPSA-designated or medically underserved facility, which many pediatric employers in rural or underserved areas satisfy.
