Secure state licensure before applying
USCIS requires an active RN license in the state where you'll work before approving an H-1B for a nursing supervisor role. Reciprocity timelines vary by state, so start the endorsement process early to avoid delaying your employer's filing window.
Verify the role's specialty occupation standing
Not every supervisor title clears the specialty occupation threshold. Pull the O*NET profile for Registered Nurses and First-Line Supervisors of Healthcare Workers to confirm the degree requirement language matches your job duties before negotiating sponsorship.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Registered Nurse Supervisor openings by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history, so you're applying to organizations that have already committed to sponsoring this role, not just ones that might consider it.
Ask about the prevailing wage tier at offer stage
DOL assigns prevailing wages by location and experience level. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level II or Level III wage for your metro area before your offer call, so you know whether the salary offer meets the legal floor your employer must certify.
Confirm the employer files before the April 1 deadline
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed in early April for an October 1 start date. Ask your prospective employer during the offer stage when they plan to submit and whether they use premium processing, since nursing supervisor transitions often hinge on exact start dates.

Find Registered Nurse Supervisor JobsRegistered Nurse Supervisor H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Registered Nurse Supervisor role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in nursing or a directly related field. USCIS looks at whether a BSN is the normal minimum for the role industry-wide, not just at your employer. Supervisory nursing positions that require clinical judgment alongside management duties typically clear this bar, but purely administrative titles without direct patient care oversight can face RFEs.
Do I need my RN license before my employer files the H-1B petition?
Yes. USCIS requires proof of state licensure as part of the H-1B approval for registered nursing roles. If your license is pending, your employer can't file until it's issued. If you're endorsing a license from another state, factor in that state's processing timeline, which can run several weeks to a few months depending on the board's backlog.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Registered Nurse Supervisor positions?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, Veterans Affairs facilities, and multisite long-term care networks are the most active H-1B sponsors for this role. Nonprofit hospitals affiliated with universities may qualify as cap-exempt, allowing year-round filing. You can filter employers by verified LCA filing history for this job title on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new nursing supervisor employer mid-visa?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Once your current petition has been pending or approved for at least 180 days, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval. The new role must be in the same or a similar occupational classification, which nursing supervisor positions across different care settings typically satisfy.
What documents does my employer need to sponsor my H-1B as a Registered Nurse Supervisor?
Your employer needs your current state RN license, NCLEX pass documentation, academic transcripts confirming your nursing degree, and a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. On their side, they must file a certified LCA with DOL before submitting the I-129 to USCIS. If premium processing is used, USCIS targets a 15-business-day adjudication window.
