Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Verify your ASCP certification before applying
USCIS expects documentary proof that your role meets specialty occupation standards. Your ASCP Board of Certification credential is the strongest evidence linking your degree to the CLS job classification. Have it ready before submitting any application.
Target reference labs and hospital networks first
Large reference laboratories and multi-site hospital systems file H-1B petitions regularly and have established immigration programs. Smaller independent labs often lack the infrastructure to sponsor, so filtering by employer type saves significant time in your search.
Check prevailing wage levels using OFLC Wage Search
Your H-1B petition requires a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your CLS specialty and work location. Pull the current wage level before negotiating an offer so you can confirm the employer's proposed salary clears the legal threshold.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by occupation code to see which employers have filed H-1B petitions for Clinical Laboratory Scientist roles. This lets you prioritize outreach to labs and health systems with a documented sponsorship track record rather than guessing.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment during the offer stage
If you're on STEM OPT or a cap-gap extension, your employer must be E-Verify enrolled to maintain your work authorization. Confirm enrollment before accepting an offer, not after, since unenrolled employers can't legally employ you under those statuses.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated early in the process
If your clinical laboratory degree is from outside the U.S., USCIS will scrutinize the equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your employer's I-129 petition.

Find Clinical Laboratory Scientist JobsClinical Laboratory Scientist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Laboratory Scientist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats Clinical Laboratory Scientist as a specialty occupation because the position typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science, or a closely related field. The O*NET profile for this occupation confirms the degree requirement, which is the core test for specialty occupation status. Your employer documents this in the H-1B petition.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Laboratory Scientists?
Hospital systems, large reference laboratories, public health departments, and academic medical centers are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for CLS roles. These organizations file petitions regularly and have immigration counsel on retainer. Smaller community labs and physician office labs sponsor far less often because the administrative overhead of H-1B sponsorship doesn't fit their operational model. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with verified H-1B filing history in this occupation.
Does my ASCP certification affect my H-1B eligibility?
It strengthens your petition significantly. USCIS evaluates whether the specific job requires a degree in a directly related field. The ASCP Board of Certification credential documents that you meet the professional standards tied to that degree requirement, which reduces the likelihood of a Request for Evidence challenging specialty occupation status. Some employers list ASCP certification as a condition of employment, which further supports the argument.
Can a Clinical Laboratory Scientist change employers while on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Once your current petition has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status, a new employer can file a transfer petition and you can start working as soon as that petition is received by USCIS. The new employer must file before your current status expires, and the new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation in the same or a related field.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect Clinical Laboratory Scientists at cap-exempt employers?
If your employer is a nonprofit research institution, university, or government research organization, the H-1B cap and lottery don't apply. You can file at any time of year and start work once the petition is approved. Most hospital systems and commercial reference labs are cap-subject, meaning your petition enters the annual lottery held each March. Understanding this distinction matters when comparing job offers.
