Verify your DPM degree meets requirements
USCIS requires a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation before applying so employers aren't surprised during filing.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark offers
Podiatry wage levels vary significantly by setting and geography. Run your job title and work location through OFLC Wage Search before negotiating so you know whether an offer meets the prevailing wage the employer must certify on your LCA.
Target federally qualified health centers specifically
FQHCs and nonprofit hospital systems can qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, letting you bypass the annual lottery entirely. Filter your search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with active H-1B LCA filing history in podiatry.
Confirm state licensure before your start date
H-1B approval doesn't guarantee you can practice. Each state has its own podiatry license timeline, and USCIS expects your license to be in place by your employment start date. Start the application as soon as you have a job offer.
Check the O*NET profile before interviews
Podiatry's O*NET classification anchors the specialty occupation argument in your petition. Reviewing the listed tasks and required knowledge areas helps you frame your experience accurately when employers and their attorneys build the LCA.

Find Podiatrist JobsPodiatrist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does podiatry qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS recognizes podiatry as a specialty occupation because it requires a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree at minimum. The DPM is a professional doctorate specific to the field, which satisfies the theoretical and practical application standard USCIS applies when evaluating H-1B petitions.
Can podiatrists avoid the H-1B lottery?
Yes, if your employer qualifies as cap-exempt. Hospitals affiliated with a university, federally qualified health centers, and certain nonprofit research institutions can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. Positions at for-profit private practices are cap-subject and subject to the lottery. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with cap-exempt filing history in podiatry.
What documents do I need before a podiatry employer can file my H-1B petition?
You'll need your DPM degree and transcripts, a foreign credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., your current state podiatry license or evidence it's in progress, your CV, and passport copies. The employer also needs to complete a DOL Labor Condition Application before USCIS will accept the I-129 petition.
How does prevailing wage work for H-1B podiatry positions?
DOL requires your employer to certify on the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for your job title and work location. Prevailing wages are set by DOL using Bureau of Labor Statistics survey data and are broken into four wage levels based on experience and supervision. Your employer selects the appropriate level when completing the LCA.
Can I switch from one podiatry employer to another on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Once your petition has been pending for 180 days, you can change to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification while the original petition remains pending. Your new employer must file a new H-1B petition before you start work, but you don't lose your priority date.
