Verify your CRNA credentials meet H-1B requirements
USCIS requires a master's degree or higher for specialty occupation classification. Confirm your nurse anesthesia program meets this threshold and that your NBCRNA certification is current before targeting H-1B employers.
Use OFLC Wage Search to set salary expectations
Look up the prevailing wage for Nurse Anesthetist roles in your target metro area before negotiating offers. Your employer's LCA must certify they'll pay at least the DOL wage level, so knowing this figure protects you from undervalued offers.
Target hospitals enrolled in E-Verify for STEM-adjacent roles
Large hospital systems and academic medical centers file H-1B petitions far more consistently than independent surgical practices. Filter your search to employer groups with documented H-1B LCA history in anesthesia to avoid wasting time on one-off sponsors.
Search Migrate Mate for verified CRNA H-1B employers
Pull up Nurse Anesthetist roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B LCA filing history for this occupation code, so you're applying to organizations with a real sponsorship track record rather than guessing from job postings.
Ask employers about cap-exempt petition eligibility early
Hospitals affiliated with universities or nonprofit research institutions may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B sponsors, letting you start without waiting for the annual lottery. Confirm this status directly with the employer's HR or immigration counsel before you enter the hiring process.
Time your offer acceptance around the H-1B filing window
USCIS accepts H-1B cap petitions in April for an October 1 start date. If your offer comes in outside that window, negotiate a start date that aligns with the next cap period or confirm the employer will file premium processing to meet your needs.
H-1B Visa Nurse Anesthetist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Nurse Anesthetist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Nurse Anesthetist positions as specialty occupations because they require at minimum a master's degree in nurse anesthesia as a standard entry requirement for the role. Your employer documents this requirement in the H-1B petition, and your NBCRNA certification supports the occupational qualification. Roles that list a bachelor's degree as sufficient may face additional scrutiny.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Nurse Anesthetists?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and anesthesia group practices affiliated with nonprofit or university health networks sponsor H-1B petitions for CRNAs most consistently. Smaller independent surgical centers sometimes sponsor but less predictably. You can browse Nurse Anesthetist roles filtered by verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate to identify employers with a documented sponsorship track record in this specialty.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for an H-1B Nurse Anesthetist petition?
Your employer's Labor Condition Application must certify they'll pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your specific geographic area and job level. Wage levels are tiered from Level I through Level IV based on experience and supervisory responsibility. You can look up the applicable wage for your target market using the OFLC Wage Search tool before negotiating an offer, so you know what the LCA must reflect.
Can a Nurse Anesthetist employer sponsor an H-1B outside the annual lottery?
Some can. Hospitals affiliated with universities, nonprofit research institutions, or government entities may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B sponsors, allowing petitions to be filed at any time without entering the lottery. If you're targeting academic medical centers or VA-affiliated systems, ask their HR team directly whether they file under the cap-exempt category before committing to a timeline.
How does the H-1B process work for a Nurse Anesthetist changing employers?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new H-1B employer once the new petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and your status is otherwise maintained. Your new employer files a fresh I-129 petition with a new LCA. The 60-day grace period after leaving a prior employer gives you time to secure and initiate the new filing.
