Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS scrutinizes Project Site Manager petitions because some adjudicators view the role as not requiring a specific degree. Document how your civil engineering, construction management, or architecture degree directly applies to the position's technical duties.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiations
Look up the prevailing wage for your exact work location before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify they'll pay at least that wage level, and knowing Level I through Level IV ranges gives you leverage in salary discussions.
Target general contractors with cap-exempt affiliations
Construction firms contracted to universities, research hospitals, or nonprofit research institutions may qualify as cap-exempt employers. A cap-exempt sponsor means your petition can be filed any time, bypassing the annual lottery entirely.
Search Migrate Mate by employer LCA filing history
Filter Project Site Manager roles on Migrate Mate by employers with verified H-1B LCA filings. This surfaces construction companies and engineering firms that have already navigated specialty occupation approvals for this job title, not just employers who say they sponsor.
Request premium processing before your start date
On large infrastructure projects, employers sometimes delay filing until a project award is confirmed. Push for I-907 premium processing so USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days, protecting your start date if you're transferring from another status.
Prepare a detailed specialty occupation support letter
Your employer's support letter should map specific project duties, such as coordinating structural subcontractors or managing compliance with building codes, to the degree requirements in O*NET. Generic job descriptions are a common cause of H-1B RFEs for this title.
H-1B Visa Project Site Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Site Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but approval isn't automatic. USCIS requires the employer to demonstrate that the specific position normally requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. Roles that accept any degree or substitute extensive experience in place of a degree face a higher risk of a Request for Evidence. The job posting and offer letter should state the degree requirement explicitly.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Project Site Manager positions?
General contractors, engineering-procurement-construction firms, and large infrastructure developers are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this title. You can find employers with verified LCA filing history for Project Site Manager roles on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by employers who have actually filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for this occupation, not just those who claim to sponsor.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Project Site Manager H-1B petitions?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer submits an LCA to the DOL certifying they'll pay you at least the prevailing wage for your work location and job level. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the current wage level for your metro area before your offer is finalized. If the project involves multiple sites in different states, the employer may need separate LCAs for each primary worksite location.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new construction employer mid-project?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as they file a new petition on your behalf, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've maintained lawful status. You don't need to wait for USCIS to approve the transfer petition. Confirm the new employer files promptly so your authorization is continuous across the project handoff.
Does working across multiple job sites affect my H-1B status as a Project Site Manager?
Working at client sites or project locations not listed on your original LCA can create compliance issues. Your employer is required to post LCA notices at each worksite and, for short-term placements, follow DOL's short-term placement rules, which generally allow up to 60 workdays per year at non-certified locations. For longer assignments, USCIS and DOL expect an amended petition or a new LCA covering the additional location.
