Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
H-1B approval depends on your role meeting the specialty occupation standard. Check the O*NET profile for Event Coordinators to confirm the degree fields USCIS recognizes as directly related before your employer files.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Event Coordinator roles. Prior LCA filings signal an established H-1B process and an HR team familiar with sponsorship timelines.
Negotiate your start date around the cap deadline
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start. Push your offer negotiation to confirm your employer will meet the registration window, not just the filing deadline.
Document event-specific credentials before applying
CMP or CEM certifications alone don't satisfy H-1B requirements, but they strengthen specialty occupation arguments. Pair them with your degree transcripts and a job description that explicitly lists a bachelor's degree as required.
Confirm your employer is registered with E-Verify
Some event companies, particularly boutique agencies, haven't enrolled in E-Verify. USCIS requires E-Verify participation for H-1B cap-exempt employers and certain federal contractors, so confirm enrollment status before accepting an offer.
Request the LCA wage level in writing before signing
DOL assigns your role a wage level from I to IV on the LCA. Level I locks in an entry wage that can limit raises. Ask your employer which level they're filing under and verify it against the OFLC Wage Search for your metro area.
H-1B Visa Event Coordinator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Event Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS requires that the role normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. An Event Coordinator job description that lists a degree in event management, hospitality management, or communications as a minimum requirement supports a specialty occupation argument. Generic listings that say 'bachelor's preferred' or accept any degree field are harder to approve.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Event Coordinators?
Universities, hospital systems, large hotel groups, convention centers, and corporate event departments at Fortune 500 companies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. They have dedicated HR infrastructure and recurring filing needs. Boutique event agencies and nonprofits sponsor less frequently, though it does happen. You can filter for employers with active LCA filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition if I'm currently on OPT?
Yes. If you're working as an Event Coordinator on OPT when your employer files your H-1B in April, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your OPT authorization through September 30 if your OPT expires before October 1. If your case is still pending after September 30, your cap-gap extension continues until USCIS issues a final decision, as long as you remain in the same role.
What happens if my H-1B petition is denied while I'm working as an Event Coordinator?
A denial ends your authorization to work in that H-1B status. If you're transitioning from OPT, your cap-gap protection also ends. You'd need to stop working immediately and either file an appeal, have your employer refile with a stronger specialty occupation argument, or explore a change of status to another visa category. USCIS issues a Request for Evidence before most denials, giving your employer a chance to respond.
How does prevailing wage work for Event Coordinator H-1B filings?
Your employer must pay you at least the prevailing wage for your specific occupation, job duties, and work location. DOL sets this using the OFLC Wage Search tool, which assigns a wage level based on your experience and responsibilities. Level I reflects entry-level duties; Level III or IV reflects senior coordinators managing large budgets or teams. The wage on your LCA becomes a floor your employer can't drop below during your H-1B period.
