Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Program Manager
Verify your degree aligns with specialty occupation
H-1B approval for TPM roles depends on demonstrating that your degree directly relates to program management. A computer science, engineering, or information systems degree strengthens the specialty occupation argument far more than a general business degree.
Target employers with certified LCA histories
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter employers who have filed LCAs under program manager SOC codes. Companies with repeated filings for this title are operationally familiar with the H-1B process and far less likely to withdraw sponsorship mid-hire.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Technical Program Manager roles by employers with documented H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate. This eliminates companies that list sponsorship as possible but have never actually filed, saving weeks of misdirected applications.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer timeline
USCIS premium processing upgrades I-129 adjudication to 15 business days. For TPM roles with defined project start dates, ask your employer to include this in the offer, since standard processing can run several months and delay your start date.
Clarify SOC code before your employer files the LCA
TPM roles get filed under varying SOC codes depending on how the employer categorizes the work. Confirm with HR whether the LCA will use a software development, management, or project management code, because the prevailing wage obligation and RFE risk differ significantly by classification.
Build a scope-of-work summary for your employer's petition
USCIS RFEs for TPM petitions often challenge whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Prepare a concise written summary of your technical deliverables, systems you oversee, and engineering team dependencies to help your employer's attorney respond quickly if an RFE arrives.
H-1B Visa Technical Program Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Program Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it's not automatic. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical discipline. TPM positions that involve direct oversight of engineering systems, software architecture decisions, or cross-functional technical delivery are stronger candidates than roles defined primarily around scheduling and coordination. Your employer's petition language and the job description both shape the outcome.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Program Managers?
Large-scale software, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise technology companies file the most LCAs for TPM roles. You can verify which employers have certified LCAs for this title by searching the OFLC Wage Search by occupation. For a filtered list of employers actively hiring TPMs with H-1B sponsorship, Migrate Mate surfaces companies with documented filing histories so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness.
What happens to my H-1B status if my TPM role is reclassified or restructured after I'm sponsored?
A material change to your job duties, location, or employer entity can require an amended H-1B petition before the change takes effect. If your role shifts from a technical program focus to a general management or non-technical scope, that reclassification could affect specialty occupation standing. USCIS guidance treats a change in job duties that alters the underlying specialty occupation as a triggering event for an amended filing.
Can I switch employers as a sponsored Technical Program Manager without losing my H-1B?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If you've had an approved I-140 or have been in H-1B status for at least a year, you can start a new TPM role at a new employer while the transfer petition is pending, as long as the new role is in a same or similar occupational classification. Your new employer must file the transfer petition before your current status expires.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect my timeline for a Technical Program Manager offer?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions follow an annual cycle: USCIS opens registration in March, conducts the lottery, and selected petitions can be filed for an October 1 start date. If your employer is not cap-exempt, you'll need a job offer in place well before the March registration window. Roles at universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government-affiliated employers are cap-exempt and can file year-round.
