Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Project Manager
Map your degree to the role
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to project management functions. A business, engineering, or information systems degree strengthens your petition. If your degree is in an unrelated field, gather course transcripts showing relevant coursework before applying.
Filter employers by LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Project Manager roles. This shows which companies have a documented H-1B sponsorship track record for this specific title, not just general sponsorship willingness.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Project Manager in your target city before you receive an offer. Your employer must pay at least that wage, so knowing Level II or III benchmarks helps you evaluate whether an offer meets DOL requirements.
Confirm the role meets specialty occupation standards
Not every Project Manager role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Review the O*NET profile for this title and confirm the job description explicitly requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field, not just any degree or equivalent experience.
Request premium processing if you're near an OPT deadline
If your OPT or STEM OPT expiration is approaching, ask your employer to file with premium processing. USCIS adjudicates premium petitions within 15 business days, which matters if your cap-gap protection window is tight.
Clarify consulting or staffing arrangements upfront
Project Managers placed at client sites through a staffing agency face additional USCIS scrutiny around employer control. Before accepting an offer from a staffing firm, confirm the petitioning employer can document day-to-day supervision and project assignment authority.
H-1B Visa Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS requires that the role normally require a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum entry requirement. A Project Manager role tied to software development, engineering, or construction typically qualifies. A generalist PM role where any bachelor's degree is acceptable may face an RFE, so the job description needs to be precise about the required field of study.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Project Managers?
Technology, construction, healthcare IT, and financial services have the highest LCA filing volumes for Project Manager titles. Within tech, employers managing large software implementations or infrastructure builds regularly sponsor this role. You can browse companies with verified H-1B filing history for Project Manager positions directly on Migrate Mate.
Can a staffing agency sponsor my H-1B as a Project Manager?
Yes, but USCIS applies stricter scrutiny to staffing arrangements. The petitioning employer must demonstrate it controls your day-to-day work, even if you're placed at a client site. End-client letters confirming supervision are often required. If the staffing firm can't document employer control, USCIS may deny the petition or issue an RFE.
What happens to my H-1B status if my project ends or my employer loses a contract?
If your employer terminates your employment, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new H-1B sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S. Project-based roles carry real layoff risk, so identifying backup employers before your project closes is practical. A new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition, and you can begin working for them once USCIS receives the filing.
How do I know if a Project Manager job posting will lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Job descriptions that explicitly state H-1B sponsorship is available are the clearest signal, but many employers sponsor without advertising it. Checking an employer's LCA filing history through DOL disclosure data shows past sponsorship for this specific title. Migrate Mate surfaces this data by employer and role so you can focus on companies with a documented track record of sponsoring Project Managers.
