Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Facilities Project Manager
Align your degree to specialty occupation
USCIS requires your role to demand a specific bachelor's degree field. A degree in civil engineering, architecture, or construction management maps cleanly to Facilities Project Manager. A business or unrelated degree weakens the petition and invites an RFE.
Pull prevailing wage data before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location before any offer conversation. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing the floor protects you during negotiation.
Target employers with dedicated facilities teams
Corporations managing large real estate portfolios, hospital networks, and university systems typically maintain in-house facilities departments with established H-1B filing processes. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with LCA filing history in facilities and construction management roles.
Verify your employer is E-Verify enrolled
H-1B cap-subject employers must be enrolled in E-Verify. For Facilities Project Manager roles that involve federal contracts or government-adjacent properties, E-Verify enrollment is often a separate compliance requirement your employer already meets.
Document multi-site project authority carefully
If your role spans multiple facilities or locations, USCIS may scrutinize whether each site requires a separate LCA. Work with your employer to document a fixed primary worksite and clarify itinerant work provisions before the I-129 is filed.
Review the O*NET profile before your petition
The O*NET occupation profile for Facilities Managers lists degree requirements and specialized knowledge that directly supports the specialty occupation argument. Share this with your employer's attorney to strengthen the job duties section of the H-1B petition.

Find Facilities Project Manager JobsFacilities Project Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facilities Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as civil engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering, or construction management. Roles that accept any degree or rely primarily on trade experience rather than theoretical knowledge can face RFEs. Your job description should emphasize technical analysis, code compliance oversight, and systems engineering to support the specialty occupation classification.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Facilities Project Manager roles?
Healthcare systems, large universities, corporate real estate firms, and technology campuses with significant owned or leased facilities are the most consistent sponsors for this role. These employers maintain ongoing capital improvement programs that require full-time project management staff. Search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history specifically in facilities and construction management job categories.
Can I work across multiple buildings or campuses on an H-1B as a Facilities Project Manager?
You can, but your employer must file a separate Labor Condition Application for each worksite that is not within normal commuting distance of your primary location. Short-term placements at additional sites may fall under the itinerant worker exemption, but ongoing multi-site responsibility typically requires additional LCA coverage. Confirm your employer's plan before accepting a role with distributed facilities oversight.
What happens to my H-1B status if my facilities project ends before my visa expires?
Your H-1B is tied to your employer, not to a specific project. As long as your employer-employee relationship continues and the employer has work for you, your status remains valid even if the original project concludes. If your position is eliminated entirely, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, transfer your H-1B, or take other action to maintain status.
Does facilities project management work qualify for H-1B cap exemption through a university or nonprofit?
If you're employed directly by a qualifying institution such as a university, nonprofit research organization, or government research entity, your position may be cap-exempt, meaning no lottery is required. Facilities staff employed by a third-party contractor working on a university campus typically do not qualify. The exemption applies to direct employment relationships with the cap-exempt institution, not to work performed at their facilities.
