Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Transportation Project Manager
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to transportation project management. Civil engineering, construction management, and urban planning degrees qualify cleanly. A general business degree alone often triggers an RFE, so gather transcripts and course descriptions that show engineering or infrastructure coursework.
Target infrastructure consultants over general contractors
Engineering consulting firms like AECOM, WSP, and HDR file H-1B petitions regularly for project management roles tied to specific transportation contracts. General contractors often classify these roles differently, making specialty occupation harder to establish in the petition.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter your job search on Migrate Mate by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for transportation or engineering roles. This cuts through listings from employers who won't file, letting you focus applications where sponsorship is already established practice.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your job title and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for transportation project managers in your target metro before you enter salary discussions.
Attach project documentation to your petition package
H-1B petitions for project manager roles sometimes face RFEs questioning whether the position truly requires a specialized degree. Include executed project contracts, your scope-of-work description, and any PE licensure or PMP certification to reinforce the specialty occupation argument your employer's attorney is building.
Plan your timeline around the April 1 filing window
H-1B cap petitions can only be filed from April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in summer or fall, your start date will be the following October. Confirm your employer understands this timeline before you resign from a current role.
H-1B Visa Transportation Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Transportation Project Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, when the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as civil engineering, construction management, or transportation planning. The employer must demonstrate in the LCA and I-129 petition that the role isn't performable by someone with an unrelated degree. Roles tied to public infrastructure contracts or regulated engineering work have a stronger specialty occupation argument than general construction coordination roles.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Transportation Project Managers?
Engineering consulting firms, transit authorities, state DOT contractors, and large infrastructure developers consistently file H-1B LCAs for this role. Firms working on federally funded transportation projects are particularly active sponsors because contract requirements often mandate credentialed project management. You can identify employers with verified H-1B filing history for this job title by searching Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by role and employer.
Can a PMP certification substitute for a bachelor's degree in the H-1B petition?
No. USCIS requires a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent in a directly related field as the baseline for specialty occupation. A PMP certification strengthens the petition by demonstrating professional standards, but it doesn't replace the degree requirement. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency showing equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's is required.
How does working on a multi-state transportation project affect my H-1B petition?
If your role requires you to work at multiple project sites across state lines, your employer must file a separate LCA for each work location where you'll spend significant time. Short-term placements under ten consecutive workdays may qualify for a short-term placement exception, but ongoing project work at a second site requires its own LCA certified at the prevailing wage for that location.
What happens to my H-1B status if my transportation project ends before my petition expires?
If your employer terminates your employment before your H-1B end date, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart the U.S. A new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition during that window, and you can begin work once USCIS receives it. Project-based roles in infrastructure carry this risk, so tracking your project timeline against your I-94 expiration is practical planning, not just formality.
