Security Product Manager roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, cybersecurity, or a related field. Employers in this space file LCAs with the DOL before sponsoring, and cap-subject petitions enter the annual lottery each March.

Align your degree to the role
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to Security Product Manager duties. A cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems degree makes the specialty occupation case cleanest. An unrelated degree raises RFE risk even if your work history is strong.
Check LCA filings before applying
Use Migrate Mate to filter Security Product Manager roles by employers who have active LCA filings with the DOL. This confirms the employer has sponsored this specific occupation before, not just technical roles broadly.
Prioritize cap-exempt employer categories
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition skips the lottery entirely. Security-focused product roles exist at these institutions, and you can start any time of year.
Request premium processing at offer stage
USCIS processes premium processing petitions within 15 business days. For Security Product Manager roles with clearance requirements or project start dates tied to contracts, ask your employer to include premium processing before signing your offer.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run the job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search to see the Level I through Level IV wage tiers. Security Product Manager roles in high-cost metros often fall at Level II or III, which affects both your LCA certification and your negotiating floor.
Use O*NET to build your specialty occupation case
The O*NET occupation profile for this role lists the knowledge domains and degree requirements adjudicators reference. Matching your resume language to those descriptors strengthens the specialty occupation argument your employer makes in the I-129 petition.

Find Security Product Manager JobsSecurity Product Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Product Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS defines specialty occupation as a role requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the duties. Security Product Manager positions require knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks, threat modeling, and product development, which typically maps to degrees in computer science, cybersecurity, or information systems. Your employer documents this in the I-129 petition.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Security Product Managers?
Employers with established H-1B filing history in product and security disciplines are your strongest targets. These include enterprise software companies, cloud infrastructure providers, defense contractors, and cybersecurity vendors. You can search Migrate Mate to see which employers have filed LCAs for Security Product Manager and related titles, filtered by location and filing recency.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Security Product Manager job seekers?
Cap-subject H-1B registrations open each March for a mid-April lottery. If selected, your employer files the full petition and you can start October 1. If not selected, you can reapply the following year or pursue cap-exempt employers such as universities and nonprofit research institutions that can sponsor you outside the lottery on any timeline.
Can a Security Product Manager role require a security clearance and still be H-1B sponsored?
The H-1B status itself is not a barrier to initiating a clearance process, but clearances require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence for most federal and DoD positions. Civilian security product roles at commercial companies can still be H-1B sponsored even if they involve working with cleared teams, as long as the role itself doesn't require personal clearance eligibility.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer is acquired or restructured?
Under AC21 portability provisions, you can transfer your H-1B to a new employer without losing your place in the cap count, as long as the new role is in the same or similar occupational classification. For Security Product Manager roles, this typically means the successor employer files an amended or new I-129. Your status remains valid during the transfer period.
