Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Program Director
Map your degree to Program Director duties
USCIS evaluates whether your specific degree field aligns with the role's core functions. A Program Director overseeing clinical trials needs a health sciences or public health background, not just any bachelor's degree. Document how your coursework directly supports the program scope in your offer letter.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Program Director roles by employers who have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for this title. LCA history confirms an employer understands the sponsorship process, not just that they're open to it.
Verify prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Look up the Level II or Level III wage for your SOC code and work location using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation. DOL requires your employer to pay at least the prevailing wage on the LCA, so knowing the floor protects you from underpaid offers that could delay certification.
Clarify the employer's filing timeline upfront
Program Director roles often involve a long onboarding process. Confirm whether your employer plans to file for the October 1 cap start date or use cap-exempt status if they're a nonprofit or university. A misaligned timeline can leave you in a 60-day grace period with no petition filed.
Document multi-site program scope precisely
If your Program Director role covers multiple locations, your employer must file a separate LCA for each worksite where you'll spend a meaningful amount of time. USCIS and DOL both scrutinize multi-location H-1B petitions, so your job description should specify each site and the corresponding program responsibilities.
Check your O*NET profile for specialty occupation support
The O*NET profile for Program Director occupations lists the education and knowledge requirements adjudicators reference. Pull the specific knowledge domains and typical entry-level requirements from O*NET and confirm they match what your employer states in the H-1B petition support letter.

Find Program Director JobsProgram Director H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Program Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS defines a specialty occupation as one that normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific related field. Program Director positions typically require degrees in public health, education, business administration, or a field directly tied to the program's subject matter. Generic management experience alone won't satisfy the requirement. Your employer's support letter must connect the specific program scope to your degree field.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Program Director roles most often?
Healthcare systems, universities, research institutions, and large nonprofits are among the most active H-1B sponsors for Program Director titles because many already operate as cap-exempt employers under INA Section 214(c)(3)(B). Tech companies and government contractors also sponsor frequently. You can filter by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for this role on Migrate Mate, which surfaces that data directly from DOL filings.
What happens to my H-1B petition if the program I'm directing gets restructured or defunded?
If your position is eliminated or your duties change substantially, your H-1B status may be affected because the petition is tied to the specific role and employer described in the approved petition. Your employer must notify USCIS of material changes. You have a 60-day grace period after involuntary termination to find a new sponsor or change status. Document your original job duties carefully so any post-restructuring changes are easy to identify.
Can my employer file an H-1B for a Program Director role if the position is fully remote?
Yes, but the LCA must list each location where you'll perform work. For fully remote roles, your home address is typically listed as the worksite, and the prevailing wage requirement applies to that location's wage level. If you move to a different metropolitan area, your employer needs to file an amended LCA and potentially an amended H-1B petition. Confirm this process with your employer before accepting a remote offer.
How do I know if a Program Director job posting actually leads to H-1B sponsorship?
Job postings that mention visa sponsorship vary widely in accuracy. The most reliable signal is an employer's prior LCA filing history for this specific title, which is public DOL data. Postings that say 'will sponsor for the right candidate' often involve employers unfamiliar with the full cost and timeline. Confirming the employer has filed H-1B petitions for Program Director roles before before engaging saves significant time.
