Frame your degree as field-specific
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree and the Program Coordinator role. Document how your major maps to the program's subject area, a generic business degree supporting a public health program needs a stronger narrative than a public health degree does.
Target cap-exempt organizations first
Universities, teaching hospitals, and nonprofit research institutions are exempt from the H-1B annual cap. Program Coordinator roles are common in these settings, so you can start in April rather than waiting for an October start date.
Check LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Pull each employer's Labor Condition Application history before applying. Migrate Mate surfaces which organizations have filed LCAs for Program Coordinator roles, so you can focus your applications on employers with a documented track record.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your location and SOC code. Run your target city and the relevant occupation code through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you know the floor.
Request premium processing when timing is tight
If your OPT or current status expires close to the October 1 start date, ask your employer to file with premium processing. USCIS adjudicates premium cases within 15 business days, giving both sides certainty before your authorization lapses.
Document program complexity in your resume
H-1B petitions for Program Coordinator roles face RFEs when the job looks administrative rather than specialized. Quantify scope: grant amounts managed, cross-agency partnerships, compliance reporting obligations, and any regulatory frameworks the role operates under.
H-1B Visa Program Coordinator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Program Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the position is structured. USCIS requires that a bachelor's degree in a specific field be a normal minimum for entry into the role. Program Coordinator positions tied to specialized domains like public health, international development, or research administration are more defensible than generalist coordination roles. Your employer's job description must clearly state the degree requirement and explain why that field is necessary.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Program Coordinators?
Universities, hospitals, nonprofits, and federal contractors are the most active sponsors for this role. These organizations are also frequently cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round without competing in the annual lottery. Browse Migrate Mate to filter Program Coordinator listings by employers with active H-1B LCA filing history, which removes guesswork from your search.
What happens to my H-1B if the program I coordinate loses funding or ends?
If the program ends and your position is eliminated, your employer must notify USCIS and withdraw the petition. You then enter a 60-day grace period to find a new H-1B sponsor, transfer to another visa status, or depart. The grace period runs from the date your employment ends, not from when the program officially closes, so start your search immediately.
Can my H-1B petition be amended if my Program Coordinator duties change significantly?
Yes, and it may be required. USCIS expects the actual job performed to match the approved petition. If your responsibilities shift materially, such as moving from grant administration into direct service delivery or taking on supervision of staff, your employer should file an amended petition before those changes take effect to avoid compliance exposure.
How do I find out what prevailing wage my employer must pay for this role?
Your employer determines the required wage using the DOL OFLC Wage Search, which assigns a wage level based on your job duties, experience requirements, and work location. The LCA your employer files with DOL certifies they'll meet that wage. You can cross-check the wage level yourself using O*NET to verify your SOC code before your offer is finalized.
