Construction Project Manager roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field. Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
H-1B approval for Construction Project Manager roles hinges on your degree matching the position. A bachelor's in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture satisfies the requirement. Degrees in unrelated fields often trigger a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search DOL LCA disclosure data using Migrate Mate to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Construction Project Manager roles. Past filings signal genuine sponsorship infrastructure, not just willingness stated in a job posting.
Check if your employer is E-Verify enrolled
All H-1B employers must be E-Verify participants. Confirm enrollment before accepting an offer. Construction firms that primarily hire domestic workers sometimes lack E-Verify registration, which delays or blocks the petition filing process entirely.
Understand prevailing wage tiers for your market
Your offer must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific work location, not national averages. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV wages for construction managers in your city before evaluating any offer.
Negotiate H-1B filing costs into your offer
USCIS requires employers to pay mandatory H-1B petition fees. Confirm your offer letter specifies the employer covers these costs. Some smaller construction firms try to pass fees to candidates, which violates USCIS regulations and signals compliance gaps.
File before the April 1 cap lottery opens
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be submitted during the March registration window for an October 1 start date. Construction project timelines rarely align with this schedule, so coordinate with your employer early to avoid a full-year wait for the next cycle.
H-1B Visa Construction Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Project Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree, regardless of field, are harder to qualify. Your employer's job description must tie the degree requirement to specific duties, not list it as a preference.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Construction Project Managers?
Large general contractors, engineering and construction firms, real estate developers, and infrastructure consultancies are the most active sponsors for this role. To find employers with verified H-1B filing history specific to construction management titles, search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation.
Can I switch construction employers on an H-1B without losing status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, as long as your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days and the new role is in the same or a related occupational classification.
Does working on a construction site across multiple locations affect my H-1B?
Yes. H-1B workers must have a certified LCA covering each worksite location. If your role requires supervising projects at different sites, your employer needs to post LCA notices and may need to file amended petitions or short-term placement documentation with USCIS for sites not covered in the original petition.
How does the O*NET classification affect my H-1B petition as a Construction Project Manager?
USCIS uses O*NET job zone classifications to assess whether a role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Construction Project Managers are classified in O*NET Job Zone 4, which lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level requirement. Your employer's attorney will reference this classification to support the specialty occupation argument in the petition.
