H-1B Visa Product Owner Jobs
Product Owner roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship under the specialty occupation standard, typically requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Employers file an LCA with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the 85,000-slot annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Product Owner
Align your degree to the role
USCIS requires a direct nexus between your degree field and the Product Owner position. A computer science or information systems degree maps cleanly, but a general business degree can trigger an RFE unless your employer documents why that field is standard for the role.
Check LCA filings before applying
Search the OFLC Wage Search to verify a company has filed LCAs for Product Owner or related titles. Employers who file regularly have an established H-1B process, which reduces delays between offer and petition submission.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition any time of year without entering the lottery. Product Owner roles exist at these organizations, particularly in edtech and research software teams.
Find H-1B-sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Product Owner openings by employers with verified H-1B filing history. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that may not sponsor, so you focus your effort where sponsorship is already documented.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer
Standard H-1B adjudication can stretch beyond six months. If your current OPT or grace period is running short, ask during offer negotiations whether the employer will pay for USCIS premium processing, which targets a 15-business-day decision.
Document your O*NET classification early
Pull the O*NET profile for Product Owner before your employer drafts the LCA. The job zone and education requirements listed there support the specialty occupation argument and give your employer's attorney a defensible baseline for the petition.
H-1B Visa Product Owner: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Owner role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can show the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as computer science, information systems, or engineering. USCIS scrutinizes Product Owner petitions more than purely technical roles, so the job description needs to emphasize the technical and analytical components rather than general management responsibilities.
What happens to my H-1B if I switch from a technical role into a Product Owner position?
A role change that materially alters your duties may require an amended H-1B petition, even if you stay with the same employer. If your previous petition was approved for a software engineering title and you move into a Product Owner function, your employer should file an amendment before the role change takes effect to avoid a status gap.
How do I find employers who are willing to sponsor H-1B visas for Product Owner jobs?
Migrate Mate surfaces Product Owner listings from employers with documented H-1B filing history, so you can focus applications on companies that have already sponsored similar roles. You can also cross-reference the OFLC Wage Search to see which employers have filed LCAs for this job title in your target location.
Can I work as a Product Owner on OPT while waiting for an H-1B decision?
Yes. If your Product Owner role falls within your degree field, OPT authorizes you to work while your employer's H-1B petition is pending. If you're in STEM OPT, the 24-month extension can bridge a lottery miss and give you a second cap-subject filing window the following April.
Does it matter which industry I work in for H-1B approval as a Product Owner?
Industry context affects how USCIS evaluates the specialty occupation argument. A Product Owner at a fintech or healthcare software company typically has a stronger case because the technical domain demands specific degree knowledge. A Product Owner at a general retail or non-technical company may face more scrutiny, making a detailed job duties letter from the employer particularly important.
