Align your degree to the role
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to engineering project management. A degree in mechanical, civil, industrial, or systems engineering is cleanest. A business or general management degree alone creates an RFE risk you'll need to rebut with additional documentation.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Engineering Project Manager roles by employers who have certified Labor Condition Applications for this occupation code. That filing history confirms the employer already understands the H-1B process for your specific role type.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your target metro area under SOC code 11-9041. Your offered salary must meet or exceed that wage level or DOL won't certify the LCA, stalling the entire petition.
Confirm your PMP credential supports the petition
A Project Management Professional certification strengthens the specialty occupation argument but doesn't replace the degree requirement. Include it in your resume and ask your employer to reference it in the H-1B support letter when documenting why the role requires specialized expertise.
Ask about premium processing before accepting
H-1B petitions for Engineering Project Managers are cap-subject and follow the lottery calendar. If you're mid-project when status expires, confirm whether your employer will file premium processing to get a 15-business-day USCIS decision rather than waiting months in the standard queue.
Review the O*NET profile during interviews
The O*NET occupation profile for Engineering Managers lists the core tasks and knowledge requirements USCIS evaluates. Cross-check your job description against those tasks before your employer drafts the H-1B support letter to close any gaps that could trigger a request for evidence.
H-1B Visa Engineering Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Engineering Project Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as civil, mechanical, industrial, or systems engineering. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title. If the role involves general coordination without requiring specialized engineering knowledge, the petition may face an RFE challenging specialty occupation status.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Project Manager positions?
Migrate Mate filters Engineering Project Manager roles by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application history, so you're not guessing at which companies will sponsor. Prioritize employers in construction, defense contracting, aerospace, and large-scale infrastructure, where project management typically requires engineering credentials and H-1B sponsorship is routine.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change engineering project management jobs?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer must file a new LCA certified at the prevailing wage for your new location.
Does a Project Management Professional certification help my H-1B petition?
It strengthens the petition but doesn't substitute for a relevant bachelor's degree. USCIS focuses on whether the degree field directly relates to the role's engineering duties. A PMP credential demonstrates professional standing and supports the argument that the position requires specialized expertise, which your employer's support letter should address explicitly.
What happens to my H-1B status if my engineering project ends before the petition expires?
If your employer terminates you before the petition expires, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart the U.S. Project-based roles carry this risk, so confirm in writing whether your employer will file a new petition if you're reassigned to a different project rather than laid off.
