Align your credentials to SOC codes
Civil Project Manager roles typically fall under SOC 11-9021. Confirm your degree and job duties map to this code before applying, since your employer's LCA and H-1B petition must reflect a consistent occupation classification.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for SOC 11-9021 in your target metro. Knowing Level I through Level IV thresholds helps you evaluate whether an offer will clear DOL certification without delays.
Target infrastructure-heavy employers first
Federal and state transportation contractors, utilities, and large engineering firms file H-1B petitions regularly for civil roles. Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified LCA filing history in civil project management.
Confirm PE licensure expectations before applying
Some employers require a Professional Engineer license to sponsor an H-1B for a senior civil PM role. If you're unlicensed, clarify whether the offer is contingent on licensure, since USCIS will scrutinize the specialty occupation basis.
Understand the 60-day grace period during transitions
If a project ends and your employer terminates your position, USCIS allows a 60-day grace period to transfer your H-1B to a new sponsor. Line up your next employer before that window closes to avoid a status gap.
Request premium processing for project-driven start dates
Civil PM roles often have hard mobilization dates tied to project schedules. Ask your employer to file Form I-907 for premium processing so USCIS adjudicates the petition within 15 business days, giving you a reliable start date.
H-1B Visa Civil Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Civil Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a directly related field. Generic management experience alone won't satisfy USCIS's specialty occupation standard. Your employer must document in the petition that the role's complexity requires degree-level engineering knowledge, not just supervisory skills or years on the job.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for civil project management roles?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified LCA filing history, so you can see which employers have already sponsored H-1B workers in civil and construction management roles. This is more reliable than assuming any large firm sponsors, since filing history confirms an employer understands the process and has done it before.
Can my H-1B petition be filed if I'm managing projects across multiple work sites?
Yes, but your employer must file a separate LCA for each worksite location where you'll spend more than a few days. DOL requires the LCA to reflect the prevailing wage for each specific metropolitan area. If project sites change frequently, your employer may need to file amended petitions or maintain a blanket LCA covering anticipated locations.
What happens to my H-1B status if the project I was hired for ends early?
Your H-1B is tied to your employer, not the project. If the employer retains you and reassigns you to another project, your status is unaffected. If they terminate your position, you have a 60-day grace period under USCIS rules to find a new sponsoring employer and file a transfer petition before your authorized stay ends.
Does holding a Professional Engineer license strengthen an H-1B petition for a Civil Project Manager?
It can help, particularly for senior roles where USCIS might otherwise question whether the position truly requires a specialized degree. A PE license signals that the role demands engineering judgment beyond general management, which reinforces the specialty occupation argument. It's not required by USCIS, but employers in regulated infrastructure sectors often require it independently.
