Frame your degree for specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to connect directly to the TPM role. A computer science or engineering degree is a clean fit. An unrelated degree needs supporting documentation showing how coursework maps to product management responsibilities.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your job title, level, and location. Pull the OFLC Wage Search before offer conversations so you know the wage floor they're legally required to meet.
Target companies with H-1B filing history in product
On Migrate Mate, filter by Technical Product Manager roles at employers with verified H-1B LCA filings. Companies that have filed for this occupation before understand the process and are less likely to withdraw sponsorship mid-hire.
Check if your employer qualifies for cap-exempt filing
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research entities can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap at any time. TPM roles at these organizations let you bypass the lottery entirely and start significantly sooner.
Review your O*NET profile before the LCA is filed
The O*NET occupation profile for Technical Product Manager defines the knowledge, skills, and typical degree requirements USCIS reviewers reference. Confirm your job duties and listed qualifications align with this profile before your employer submits the LCA.

Find Technical Product Manager JobsTechnical Product Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Product Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Technical Product Manager roles that require computer science, engineering, or information systems degrees consistently meet this standard. Roles with vague degree requirements or where any business degree qualifies are at higher risk of a Request for Evidence on specialty occupation grounds.
Which employers actually sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Product Manager positions?
Technology companies, enterprise software firms, and large fintech or healthtech organizations are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for TPM roles. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for this occupation, so you can focus your applications on companies that have already navigated the process for product management hires rather than guessing at sponsorship willingness.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Technical Product Manager role at a different company?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, provided your current status is valid. The new employer files a fresh I-129 and LCA for the TPM role. Your job duties, title, and location must match the new petition, so any material change in responsibilities requires an amended filing.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect Technical Product Manager offers?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for a Technical Product Manager in your work location and at the appropriate experience level. Wage levels run from Level I through Level IV. Most mid-level TPM roles fall at Level II or III. You can verify the applicable wage floor using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Technical Product Manager role changes significantly after the petition is approved?
A material change in duties, location, or employment terms requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition before the change takes effect. Moving to a different job site, shifting from individual contributor product work to a primarily managerial function, or a significant change in the scope of your role all trigger an amendment obligation. Working under materially different conditions than those certified on your original petition puts your status at risk.
