H-1B Visa Science Teacher Jobs
Science Teacher roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a science or education field. Most sponsoring employers are K-12 private schools, charter networks, and international schools, since public schools face additional procurement constraints. Sponsorship timelines follow the standard H-1B cap cycle with an April 1 start date.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Science Teacher
Verify your credential meets specialty occupation
Your degree must be in a science discipline or science education, not a general education field. Use O*NET to confirm the job zone and typical entry requirements for your subject area before applying.
Target private and charter schools first
Public school districts are often bound by civil service rules that complicate H-1B sponsorship. Private schools, charter networks, and international schools have more flexibility and a longer track record of filing for foreign teachers.
Search verified sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Science Teacher roles by employers with confirmed LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. This shows you which schools have sponsored before, so you don't waste applications on employers who've never navigated the process.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and government research institutions are cap-exempt. If a school partners with a university or holds nonprofit research status, it may be able to file outside the annual H-1B lottery.
Confirm the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your subject and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the correct SOC code for postsecondary or secondary teachers to verify the floor before you negotiate.
Align your start date with the H-1B cap timeline
Cap-subject H-1B approvals take effect October 1. Most teaching contracts start in August or September, so your employer needs to file by April 1 for the following academic year to avoid a gap in your work authorization.

Find Science Teacher JobsScience Teacher H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Science Teacher role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Teaching science at the secondary or postsecondary level typically qualifies because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific science or science education field. The degree must relate directly to the subject you're teaching. A general education degree without a science concentration can create problems during USCIS adjudication, so the match between your credential and your subject area matters.
Which types of schools are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for science teachers?
Private K-12 schools, international schools, charter networks, and universities with secondary programs are the most active sponsors. Public school districts can technically sponsor H-1B workers, but civil service hiring rules and procurement processes often make it difficult in practice. Searching Migrate Mate for Science Teacher roles filtered by LCA filing history shows you which employers have sponsored before.
Can a school sponsor my H-1B outside the annual lottery?
Only if the employer qualifies as cap-exempt. Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research institutions are cap-exempt and can file at any time. Some private schools affiliated with a university or holding qualifying nonprofit status may also qualify. Ask the HR team directly whether the school has cap-exempt filing status before relying on that pathway.
What happens to my H-1B status if my teaching contract isn't renewed?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or leave the country. If another school agrees to sponsor you, they file a new H-1B petition and you can begin working once USCIS receives it. The grace period starts on your last day of employment, not the end of your visa stamp's validity.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect science teacher salaries under H-1B?
Your employer's Labor Condition Application must certify that your wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation, subject area, and geographic location. You can check the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Employers cannot pay you below the certified wage for the duration of your H-1B, so understanding the floor protects you during salary negotiations.
