Verify your SOC code before applying
Security Operations Manager roles map to multiple SOC codes depending on whether the work emphasizes IT management or information security. Pull the O*NET profile for both and confirm which your target employer used on past LCA filings to avoid a specialty occupation mismatch at adjudication.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Security Operations Manager roles by employers who have filed LCAs for this exact title. Companies with consistent filing history have established internal sponsorship workflows, cutting your timeline from offer to petition significantly.
Document your security certifications strategically
USCIS scrutinizes whether a Security Operations Manager role genuinely requires a specific bachelor's degree. Certifications like CISSP, CISM, or CASP+ don't substitute for degree alignment, but they do reinforce the specialty occupation argument when your degree is in a related but not identical field.
Negotiate the LCA wage level before signing your offer
Your employer sets your wage level on the LCA, and Level I or II designations for a manager title invite RFEs. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your metro area before accepting an offer and confirm the listed wage matches at least Level III for a management role.
Flag cleared-role postings early in your search
Many Security Operations Manager roles at defense contractors and federal agencies require U.S. security clearances, which H-1B holders can't obtain. Filter these out before investing time in applications by checking whether job descriptions reference clearance eligibility requirements.
Request cap-exempt status through qualifying research entities
If you're not selected in the H-1B lottery, universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research institutions are cap-exempt employers. Some large enterprises also place security operations roles under affiliated foundations, which can be a legal path around the annual cap.
H-1B Visa Security Operations Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Operations Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, but the employer must demonstrate the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems. Generic management experience alone won't satisfy USCIS. The petition is stronger when the job description ties technical security duties directly to a degree requirement, not just preferred qualifications.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for Security Operations Manager positions?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Security Operations Manager roles specifically, so you can see verified sponsorship history rather than relying on job descriptions that say 'sponsorship possible.' Filtering by LCA filing data narrows your search to companies with real sponsorship infrastructure already in place.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I'm already a Security Operations Manager?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as your transfer petition is filed, as long as your current petition has been approved for more than 180 days. Your new employer files a new I-129 and LCA before you make the switch. You don't need to wait for USCIS approval to begin.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer is acquired or goes through a reduction in force?
If your role is eliminated, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. If your employer is acquired, your H-1B generally remains valid if your job duties and title stay materially the same. A significant restructuring that changes your role may require an amended petition.
Do defense contractors or companies with federal contracts sponsor H-1B visas for this role?
Some do, but many Security Operations Manager openings at defense contractors require a U.S. security clearance, which H-1B holders are not eligible to obtain. Before applying to federal contractors, confirm the role doesn't list clearance as a requirement. Commercial divisions of large defense firms often have clearance-free openings that do support H-1B sponsorship.
