Align your resume to SOC classifications
H-1B petitions tie your role to a specific SOC code. Pull up O*NET and confirm your experience maps to 17-2199 or a closely related code before applying. Misalignment between your resume and the filed SOC can trigger an RFE.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating offers
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before entering salary negotiations so you know the floor USCIS will scrutinize.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Test Development Engineer roles by employers who have filed LCAs in your target metro. This surfaces companies already familiar with the H-1B process for test engineering roles, not first-time sponsors.
Flag multi-site work in your petition documents
Test development engineers often split time between a primary site and client facilities or test labs. Each worksite requires its own LCA posting. Confirm your employer's attorney files a blanket or itinerary-based LCA before your start date.
Request premium processing before cap-gap expires
If you're transitioning from OPT to H-1B, cap-gap authorization ends October 1. If USCIS hasn't adjudicated by then, premium processing gives you a 15-business-day decision window and avoids an unauthorized-employment gap on your record.
Prepare a specialty occupation evidence packet early
Test development engineering roles in hardware validation or embedded systems regularly receive RFEs questioning specialty occupation status. Gather job postings from comparable roles at similar companies, your degree transcripts, and any professional certifications before your employer files.
H-1B Visa Senior Test Development Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Test Development Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates whether the specific duties, not just the title, demand that theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge. Roles focused on automated test framework design, hardware-in-the-loop validation, or FPGA test development consistently meet this standard.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Test Development Engineers?
Semiconductor companies, aerospace and defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and automotive OEMs are the heaviest sponsors for this role. These industries require specialized test infrastructure that directly maps to H-1B specialty occupation criteria. Migrate Mate lets you browse open Senior Test Development Engineer positions filtered by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you can focus on companies already set up to sponsor.
What SOC code is typically used for a Senior Test Development Engineer H-1B petition?
Most H-1B petitions for this role use SOC 17-2199 (Engineers, All Other) or 17-2061 (Computer Hardware Engineers), depending on whether the work centers on test system architecture or embedded hardware validation. The assigned SOC code determines the DOL prevailing wage your employer must certify on the LCA, so confirm the correct code with your employer's attorney before the petition is filed.
Can a Senior Test Development Engineer change employers while on H-1B?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. You can start working for the new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer files a new I-129 and LCA specific to the test engineering role and worksite before or on your start date.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Senior Test Development Engineer offers?
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and the actual work location, not the company's headquarters. For senior-level test engineering roles, this typically falls in wage level III or IV. Run the OFLC Wage Search with your specific metro area and SOC code before accepting an offer to ensure the employer's proposed salary meets the threshold USCIS will verify.
