At Paychex, you'll have the opportunity to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, and be part of something bigger as One Paychex.
Overview:
Leads the product marketing function for Paychex with accountability for the commercial strategy of every product set: the ideal customer profile, the positioning and value narrative, the pricing and packaging architecture, the go-to-market strategy, and the market intelligence that helps inform the product roadmap. Serves as the voice of the market inside Paychex, translating industry, buyer, competitive, and regulatory signal into evidence-based recommendations on what we build, who we build it for, what we charge, and how we win. Partners with Product to influence roadmap direction, owns the pricing and bundling recommendation brought to governance, and supplies the points of view and messaging strategy that Content, Design, Demand Generation, and Enablement execute against. Transforms product marketing from a request-driven execution function into a market-facing strategic partner to Product, Sales, Finance, and the broader organization — and builds the team, standards, decision rights, and operating cadence required to sustain it.
Responsibilities:
-
Market intelligence and roadmap partnership. Own continuous sensing of the HCM market — industry and technology trends, regulatory and compliance change, competitive movement, win/loss findings, analyst and channel influencer input, and market sizing. Bring a written, evidence-based point of view to every product roadmap review to influence prioritization and investment decisions, while Product Management retains the prioritization decision.
-
Ideal customer profile and buyer insight. Own the definition, maintenance, publication, and organizational adoption of the ICP, buyer and user personas, buying committee dynamics, and journey maps for every product set. Establish the voice-of-customer research program — primary interviews, advisory boards, and survey research — and hold the organization accountable to targeting, building for, and serving the profiles defined.
-
Pricing, packaging, and bundling strategy. Own the monetization strategy, analysis, and recommendation for each product set: pricing model and metric, tiering, packaging fences, bundle architecture, willingness-to-pay research, competitive price positioning, price change programs, and discount guardrails. Partner with Finance, Product, and Sales for input and modeling, and secure approval through the pricing governance forum.
-
Positioning, messaging, and value narrative. Own portfolio-level and product-level positioning and the messaging architecture that cascades across every channel. Translate product capability into customer benefits and quantified business outcomes, deliver points of view and messaging briefs to Content, Design, Demand Generation, Brand, and Enablement, and govern message consistency across the enterprise.
-
Launch and go-to-market orchestration. Own the launch tiering model, go-to-market plans, and cross-functional launch readiness across Product, Sales, Enablement, Service, Compliance, and the partner channel. Hold go/no-go authority on go-to-market readiness, accountability for 30/60/90-day post-launch performance, and ownership of end-of-life and migration go-to-market.
-
Lifecycle, adoption, and expansion. Own the post-sale commercial narrative: activation and time-to-value messaging, feature adoption strategy, cross-sell and attach strategy by ICP, the retention and renewal narrative, and the customer proof and reference agenda.
-
Talent, structure, and capability building. Build and lead a team organized by product set, including Directors and Principal or Senior Product Marketing Managers. Define the job architecture and competency model, assess and develop existing talent, recruit scarce capabilities in pricing and monetization, competitive intelligence, and primary research, and coach the team to author and defend points of view.
-
Executive influence, governance, and measurement. Represent the market point of view to executive leadership. Establish and operate the interlocks the function depends on — roadmap review participation, the pricing governance forum, and messaging governance — and define and report the business outcome metrics that replace activity-based measures of the function.

Verify your SOC code before applying
AVP roles map to different Standard Occupational Classification codes depending on function. Pull the relevant O*NET profile to confirm your duties align with the SOC your employer will use on the LCA, since a mismatch triggers RFEs.
Target employers with cap-exempt H-1B access
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated organizations can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. AVP-equivalent leadership roles exist at these entities, and you avoid the 85,000-slot cap entirely.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search AVP-level openings on Migrate Mate to see which employers have certified LCAs for this title. That filing history tells you which companies have already cleared DOL prevailing wage requirements for the role.
Negotiate your offer above the prevailing wage floor
DOL sets Level III and Level IV prevailing wages for AVP titles. Your offer letter must meet or exceed that floor before USCIS approves the petition, so confirm the wage tier with HR before signing anything.
Prepare a specialty occupation evidence package early
USCIS scrutinizes AVP petitions when the job description lists broad management duties. Assemble degree transcripts, a detailed position description tied to your specific function, and any professional licenses before your employer files.
Account for PERM timing if pursuing a green card
Many AVP sponsors begin PERM labor certification during your first or second H-1B term. Confirm whether your employer has an established PERM pipeline for this title, since delays at DOL can affect your long-term status timeline.
H-1B Visa Assistant Vice President: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Vice President role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS requires the role to normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific specialty field. Generic management duties alone may not qualify, but AVP roles with a defined technical or financial function typically satisfy the specialty occupation standard. A precise job description tied to your degree field is critical.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most frequently for AVP-level roles?
Financial services, investment banking, consulting, and technology firms account for the largest share of H-1B LCA certifications at the AVP level. Large banks, asset managers, and management consulting companies file petitions for this title each cap season. You can identify employers with active LCA history for this role on Migrate Mate before you apply.
Can an employer file an H-1B for an AVP role outside the annual lottery?
Yes, if the employer is a cap-exempt organization. Universities, affiliated nonprofits, and government research entities can petition year-round without competing for the 85,000 annual slots. Private-sector employers are subject to the cap and must register during the USCIS lottery window each March.
What prevailing wage level applies to Assistant Vice President positions?
Most AVP roles fall under DOL wage Level III or Level IV, reflecting experienced or fully competent professional workers. The exact level depends on your duties, supervisory responsibilities, and the geographic location of the position. Your employer determines the level during LCA certification, and USCIS will verify it matches the offered salary.
How does changing employers at the AVP level affect an active H-1B petition?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, provided your existing H-1B has been approved for more than 180 days. Your new employer files a transfer petition with USCIS, and you don't need to wait for approval to begin the role.
