Verify your CCC-SLP before petitions start
USCIS scrutinizes SLP petitions for proof that the role requires a specific degree. Having your CCC-SLP from ASHA current and documented removes the most common RFE trigger for specialty occupation challenges in this field.
Check state license portability across job markets
State SLP licenses don't transfer automatically. If your target employer is in a different state than your current license, confirm reciprocity timelines before signing an offer so your start date aligns with when USCIS can approve your petition.
Search H-1B employers on Migrate Mate by setting
Migrate Mate filters SLP roles by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history, letting you target hospital systems, school districts, and rehabilitation networks that have sponsored before rather than cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the process.
Prioritize cap-exempt institutions for faster timelines
Universities, nonprofit research hospitals, and government entities are cap-exempt, meaning your petition bypasses the lottery and can be filed any time of year. SLP positions at academic medical centers or university clinics often fall into this category.
Request the prevailing wage tier in writing before signing
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location before your offer letter is finalized. Your employer's LCA must certify at least that wage level, so knowing it protects you during negotiations.
Account for school district fiscal calendars in your timeline
School district SLP roles often have offer windows in spring, but cap-subject H-1B petitions can only start October 1. Confirm with the employer whether a cap-gap or bridge arrangement will cover the gap between your authorization end date and that start date.

Find Speech Pathologist JobsSpeech Pathologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Speech Pathologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Speech Pathologist positions as specialty occupations because the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders or a closely related field. The O*NET occupation profile for SLPs confirms this requirement, and most employers also require the CCC-SLP credential, which further supports the specialty occupation classification in your petition.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Speech Pathologists?
Hospital systems, rehabilitation networks, school districts, university clinics, and pediatric specialty centers are the most common H-1B sponsors for SLP roles. School districts and nonprofit or government-affiliated healthcare institutions may qualify as cap-exempt employers, which means you can file outside the April lottery window. Use Migrate Mate to filter SLP roles by employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history in your target setting.
How does state licensure affect my H-1B petition as a Speech Pathologist?
Your H-1B petition is tied to the state where you'll work, and USCIS may request proof that you hold or are eligible for that state's SLP license. If you're licensed in a different state, you'll need to initiate a reciprocity or endorsement application before or alongside your petition filing. Delays in state licensure can push back your start date or complicate the employer's ability to file on time.
Can a school district sponsor an H-1B visa for a Speech Pathologist?
Yes, and public school districts affiliated with government entities are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition at any point in the year without waiting for the April lottery. However, school district contracts typically follow an academic calendar, so confirm how your authorized stay aligns with the school year's start date and whether a cap-gap arrangement applies if you're transitioning from F-1 OPT.
What documents does an employer need to file an H-1B petition for a Speech Pathologist?
The employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying the prevailing wage for your SOC code and worksite location, then submits Form I-129 to USCIS. You'll need to provide your official transcripts, CCC-SLP certificate, current state license, and a detailed job description confirming the specialty occupation requirement. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency is also required.
