Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Tax Senior Associate
Verify your CPA credential transfers correctly
A foreign accounting credential doesn't automatically satisfy U.S. CPA requirements. Check with the state board where your target employer operates before accepting an offer, since some firms tie H-1B sponsorship eligibility to active CPA candidacy or licensure status.
Search LCA filings for tax-specific roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter employer H-1B filing history by occupation code for tax and accounting roles. This shows which firms consistently sponsor Tax Senior Associates, not just which ones sponsor H-1Bs broadly across all job families.
Target Big Four and national firms first
Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG, along with regional firms like BDO and Grant Thornton, have dedicated immigration teams and established H-1B sponsorship pipelines for Senior Associates. Boutique tax advisory firms sponsor less frequently and often lack in-house immigration infrastructure.
Confirm prevailing wage before your offer stage
Run your target metro area and experience level through the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 13-2011 before you receive a written offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage, and knowing this number protects your negotiating position.
Time your job search around the April cap filing window
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, starting your Tax Senior Associate job search by November of the prior year gives your prospective employer enough lead time to prepare the LCA and I-129 before the USCIS registration window opens in March.
Ask specifically about cap-exempt employer options
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning they can sponsor your H-1B outside the annual lottery. Tax roles at university endowment offices or nonprofit finance teams qualify and can be filed any time of year.
H-1B Visa Tax Senior Associate: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Tax Senior Associate role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Tax Senior Associate positions require at minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, finance, or a directly related field, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation definition under the H-1B category. The role's complexity, including multi-entity tax compliance, ASC 740 work, and advisory responsibilities, reinforces the degree-requirement argument employers make in the I-129 petition.
Which employers consistently sponsor H-1B visas for tax roles?
Large public accounting firms and multinational corporations with in-house tax departments sponsor the most H-1B petitions for tax professionals. You can browse verified employer filing history for Tax Senior Associate positions on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation so you're targeting firms with a documented sponsorship track record, not just a careers page that says 'we welcome international candidates.'
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new tax employer mid-year?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you haven't been out of status. The new employer must file a new LCA certified at the prevailing wage for the new work location before submitting the I-129 transfer petition.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect tax job offers?
Your employer's LCA must certify that your offered salary meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for a Tax Senior Associate in your specific metro area. The DOL uses four wage levels tied to experience and complexity. Level II or Level III wages typically apply to Senior Associate positions. You can check applicable wage levels in advance using the OFLC Wage Search tool before your offer stage.
Does holding an active CPA license affect my H-1B sponsorship eligibility?
An active CPA license strengthens your H-1B petition because it reinforces the specialty occupation argument, but USCIS doesn't require licensure for approval. What matters is that the role requires a relevant degree, not that you hold a state license. That said, some employers make CPA candidacy or licensure a condition of continued employment, which can indirectly affect the sponsorship timeline if your license isn't transferable from your home country jurisdiction.
