Verify your degree field supports this role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the Technical Operations Manager position. A degree in industrial engineering, computer science, or operations management strengthens the specialty occupation argument. A general business degree alone may trigger an RFE.
Check prevailing wages before salary negotiations
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV prevailing wages for operations manager roles in your target metro area. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the certified wage on the LCA, so negotiate knowing that floor.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Technical Operations Manager roles by employers who have certified LCAs for this occupation. Companies with recent filings have already navigated DOL certification for this role type, reducing the risk of first-timer delays on your petition.
Confirm the employer will file before the lottery
H-1B cap-subject petitions require USCIS registration in March, with the filing window opening April 1. Get written confirmation from your employer that they'll engage immigration counsel and meet that timeline, especially if your OPT or other status has a hard expiration.
Request a detailed specialty occupation support letter
Ask your employer to document why the Technical Operations Manager role requires a specific degree, not just any bachelor's degree. USCIS scrutinizes managerial titles. A letter citing O*NET job zone requirements and the technical decisions you'll make daily strengthens the petition significantly.
Understand cap-exempt employer options if you're urgent
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government contractors are cap-exempt. If you're between status options, a Technical Operations Manager role at a cap-exempt institution lets your employer file outside the annual lottery window at any time.

Find Technical Operations Manager JobsTechnical Operations Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Operations Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field such as engineering, computer science, or information systems. Generalist management roles can face RFEs, so the employer's petition must document the technical decision-making the job requires and why a specialized degree is necessary, not merely preferred.
How do I find companies that have previously sponsored H-1B visas for Technical Operations Manager positions?
Browse Migrate Mate to see employers filtered by verified LCA filing history for operations and technical management roles. Targeting companies that have already certified LCAs for this occupation type means the hiring team understands the DOL and USCIS filing requirements, which speeds up the offer-to-petition timeline considerably.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Technical Operations Manager role changes significantly after I'm approved?
A material change in duties, work location, or employer entity requires an amended H-1B petition before the change takes effect. Moving to a new worksite in a different metropolitan statistical area triggers a new LCA at that location's prevailing wage. Failing to file an amendment is a status violation, even if the job title stays the same.
Can my employer sponsor me for an H-1B if they're a small company without a dedicated HR team?
Yes. H-1B sponsorship is available to employers of any size, including startups. Small employers without in-house immigration staff typically work with outside immigration counsel to handle LCA certification through DOL and petition filing with USCIS. What matters is the employer's ability to pay the prevailing wage and demonstrate the role's specialty occupation status.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Technical Operations Manager salaries under H-1B?
The DOL assigns one of four wage levels based on your job duties, experience requirements, and geographic location. USCIS requires that the certified LCA wage be paid for the entire validity period of the H-1B, including during any bench time. You can verify the applicable wage level for your location and role using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer.
