Match your degree to laboratory SOC codes
H-1B1 visa requires your degree field to directly match the specialty occupation. Use O*NET to confirm the SOC code for your target laboratory role, then verify your Chilean credential aligns with that specific field before applying.
Target employers enrolled in E-Verify
H-1B1 visa workers must be authorized through E-Verify. Filter your laboratory job search to employers already enrolled, since companies without active E-Verify participation cannot legally onboard you under this visa category.
Find H-1B1 Chile lab employers on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. laboratory employers with documented H-1B1 Chile sponsorship history. The platform surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation, so you can target companies that have already navigated the process for your role type.
Request the LCA before your consulate appointment
Your employer must file and receive a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL before you apply at the consulate. Confirm the LCA lists your exact job title, worksite location, and prevailing wage level before scheduling your visa interview.
Verify prevailing wage with the OFLC Wage Search
Chilean laboratory professionals can negotiate salary benchmarks using the OFLC Wage Search. Look up your specific SOC code and work location to confirm your offer meets or exceeds the DOL wage level required for the LCA, which directly affects your consulate application.
Prepare your credential evaluation before job offers arrive
Chilean university degrees, including licenciatura and professional title programs, must be evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Commission a NACES-member evaluation before you start interviewing so delays in credential review don't stall your sponsorship timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do laboratory roles qualify as specialty occupations under the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Laboratory roles qualify when they require a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, or clinical laboratory science. Positions like medical laboratory scientist, research associate, or quality control analyst typically meet the specialty occupation standard. Roles where any general science degree suffices regardless of concentration may face closer scrutiny, so confirm the job description specifies a field-specific degree requirement.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa compare to the H-1B for laboratory professionals?
The H-1B1 Chile visa has no lottery, an annual cap of 1,400 that historically goes unfilled, and is processed directly at the U.S. consulate in Santiago, so you can secure approval before leaving Chile. The H-1B requires employer petition filing with USCIS, goes through a lottery with significant selection uncertainty, and involves longer employer-side costs. For Chilean laboratory professionals with a qualifying job offer, the H-1B1 is the faster and more predictable path.
What documents does a Chilean laboratory professional need for the H-1B1 consulate application?
You'll need a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL, a letter from your employer detailing your laboratory role, duties, and salary, your academic credentials with a NACES-member equivalency evaluation confirming U.S. bachelor's equivalency, your DS-160 confirmation, and a valid Chilean passport. The consulate may also request publications, certifications such as ASCP, or prior laboratory work documentation to confirm specialty occupation status.
Can I search for laboratory jobs with H-1B1 Chile sponsorship on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you filter laboratory job listings by employers with H-1B1 Chile sponsorship history, drawing on DOL Labor Condition Application data to surface companies that have actively filed for this visa category. That means you're targeting employers who already understand the consulate-based process and prevailing wage requirements specific to laboratory occupations, which reduces the time spent educating hiring teams about the visa.
Does the H-1B1 Chile visa allow me to pursue permanent residency while working in a U.S. laboratory?
The H-1B1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa that does not permit dual intent, meaning you cannot simultaneously pursue a green card application while on H-1B1 status. If your laboratory career goals include permanent residency, you'd need to transition to an H-1B or an employment-based immigrant visa category. Many laboratory professionals use the H-1B1 to build U.S. experience, then work with their employer on an H-1B sponsorship or EB-2 PERM process when the time is right.
