Translate your credentials into U.S. standards
Chilean trade certifications and technical diplomas don't map automatically to U.S. licensing frameworks. Get your credentials evaluated by a NACES-recognized agency and match your role to the correct SOC code using O*NET before applying.
Target employers enrolled in E-Verify
H-1B1 Chile requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Facilities management companies, property management firms, and industrial operators with federal contracts are far more likely to already meet this requirement than small independent contractors.
Search verified H-1B1 Chile employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by maintenance and facilities roles on Migrate Mate to find employers with documented H-1B1 Chile filing history. DOL Labor Condition Application data underpins every result, so you're targeting companies that have actually sponsored this visa category.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your experience
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application certifying your wage meets DOL prevailing wage standards for your location and role level. Run your SOC code and county through OFLC Wage Search before the offer stage so you can negotiate from accurate data.
Apply for the H-1B1 Chile at a U.S. consulate in Santiago
Unlike H-1B, there's no USCIS petition filing. Once your employer has a certified LCA, you apply directly at the consulate using DS-160. Scheduling early matters because appointment slots in Santiago can book out several weeks in advance.
Request a two-year validity period at the consulate interview
H-1B1 Chile visas are issued for up to two years and are renewable indefinitely. During your consulate interview, confirm your I-94 admission period matches your visa validity, since your authorized stay in the U.S. is governed by the I-94, not the visa stamp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a maintenance role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Specialty occupation under H-1B1 Chile requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a directly related field. General maintenance or janitorial work doesn't qualify, but roles like facilities engineer, HVAC systems technician, or building automation specialist typically do if your employer documents the theoretical and practical application of engineering or technology knowledge the position requires.
How does H-1B1 Chile compare to H-1B for maintenance and facilities roles?
H-1B requires surviving a lottery with a 25-30% selection rate, then waiting for USCIS to adjudicate a petition. H-1B1 Chile has no lottery, an annual cap of 1,400 that rarely fills, and goes straight to consulate processing after LCA certification. For Chilean professionals in qualifying maintenance roles, the H-1B1 Chile path is significantly faster and more predictable.
How do I find employers willing to sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas for maintenance jobs?
Migrate Mate shows which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for H-1B1 Chile in maintenance and facilities categories, drawn from DOL disclosure data. This lets you focus your applications on companies that have sponsored this specific visa before, rather than approaching employers who may not know the H-1B1 Chile exists.
Can my employer file the LCA while I'm still in Chile?
Yes. The employer submits the LCA to DOL through the FLAG system before you enter the U.S., and DOL typically certifies within seven working days. Once certified, you use it to apply for the visa at the U.S. consulate in Santiago. There's no requirement for you to be present in the U.S. during the LCA stage.
What happens to my H-1B1 Chile status if my maintenance job ends?
H-1B1 Chile status is employer-specific, so it ends when your employment ends. There's no statutory 60-day grace period like H-1B holders receive. USCIS has exercised discretionary grace periods in practice, but you shouldn't rely on that. Lining up a new sponsoring employer and getting a fresh LCA certified before any employment gap is the safest approach.
