Verify your credentials translate correctly
Chilean technical certificates and vocational diplomas must map to a U.S. specialty occupation. Pull your role's O*NET profile and confirm the listed education requirements match your credentials before applying to any position.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment first
H-1B1 Chile requires your employer to be authorized to hire foreign nationals. Prioritizing E-Verify-enrolled facilities, manufacturers, and property management companies cuts negotiation time once you reach the offer stage.
Search verified H-1B1 sponsor history on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by H-1B1 Chile filing history and maintenance technician job codes, so you're targeting companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process rather than educating a reluctant HR team.
Ask about the LCA before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL certifying prevailing wage compliance before your consulate appointment. Confirm this step is in their onboarding plan during the offer negotiation, not after you've given notice.
Check prevailing wage expectations using OFLC Wage Search
Maintenance technician wages vary significantly by metro area and job zone. Run your target location through OFLC Wage Search before interviews so your salary expectations align with what DOL requires the employer to certify.
Prepare a specialty occupation argument for your role
Consular officers sometimes question whether maintenance technician roles meet the H-1B1 visa specialty occupation threshold. Document the technical systems you operate, any required licensure, and the degree-level knowledge your position demands to strengthen your application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a maintenance technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Chile visa?
It depends on the specific duties and employer requirements. Roles involving building automation systems, industrial controls, HVAC engineering, or complex electromechanical systems are more likely to qualify. If the position requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a technical field like mechanical or electrical engineering, it meets the specialty occupation standard. General facilities maintenance without a degree requirement is harder to qualify.
How is the H-1B1 Chile visa different from the H-1B for maintenance technician jobs?
The H-1B1 Chile visa has no lottery, which means your application isn't subject to random selection. The annual cap of 1,400 visas for Chilean nationals rarely comes close to being filled, and processing happens at the U.S. consulate rather than through USCIS. The tradeoff is that the H-1B1 is a single-intent visa, so it doesn't support a green card pathway the way an H-1B can.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas for maintenance technician positions?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified H-1B1 Chile filing history and relevant occupation codes, so you're not spending time approaching companies unfamiliar with the process. Large manufacturers, commercial real estate firms, and industrial facilities management companies are the most active sponsors for this role category.
What documents should a Chilean maintenance technician prepare before applying for H-1B1 sponsorship?
You'll need your passport, educational credentials with translations if applicable, professional licenses or certifications relevant to your specialty, and documentation of your technical work history. If your role involves systems requiring regulated certifications such as electrical or refrigerant handling, those credentials will be particularly important for the consular officer to review alongside your employer's Labor Condition Application.
Can my H-1B1 Chile visa be renewed if I stay with the same maintenance employer long-term?
Yes. The H-1B1 Chile visa is granted in one-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain the qualifying job offer and your employer files a new Labor Condition Application with DOL for each renewal period. There's no hard cap on renewals, making it viable for long-term employment with a sponsoring company.
