Translate your credentials into U.S. standards
Chilean EHS credentials and ISO 45001 experience read well, but U.S. employers expect OSHA 30-hour certification and familiarity with EPA regulatory frameworks. Getting those before you apply removes a common hiring objection specific to international EHS candidates.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must certify your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for the EHS Manager role in their location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 11-9199 before your offer conversation so you know the floor your employer is legally required to meet.
Search verified H-1B1 Chile sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history for EHS and safety management roles. Companies that have filed before know the consulate-only process and won't stall your offer over unfamiliarity with the visa type.
Target industries with consistent EHS hiring
Manufacturing, chemical processing, construction, and energy companies file H-1B1 visa Chile LCAs regularly for EHS roles because regulatory compliance creates steady demand. Focusing your search on these sectors gives you a stronger pool of sponsorship-willing employers than a broad search across all industries.
Confirm your employer files the LCA before resigning
For H-1B1 Chile, the employer certifies the LCA with DOL and you apply directly at the U.S. consulate in Santiago. Don't leave your current job until the LCA is certified and your DS-160 appointment is scheduled, since the timeline is employer-driven, not USCIS-driven.
Use your O*NET profile to frame specialty occupation
Consular officers assess whether your role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Pull the O*NET profile for Environmental Compliance Inspectors or Industrial Safety and Health Engineers to document the degree requirements and technical duties that support your specific EHS Manager position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an EHS Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation under the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes, EHS Manager roles qualify when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as environmental science, occupational health and safety, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline. The employer's job description must reflect technical duties that a generalist without that degree couldn't perform, so the offer letter and LCA should align with the O*NET specialty occupation standard.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa compare to the H-1B for EHS Manager roles?
The H-1B1 Chile visa skips the lottery entirely and is processed at the U.S. consulate in Santiago rather than through USCIS, so your timeline runs weeks rather than months from LCA certification to visa stamp. The tradeoff is that H-1B1 Chile doesn't allow dual intent, meaning you can't pursue a green card while on status. For Chilean EHS professionals focused on getting to work quickly, H-1B1 Chile is the faster path.
How do I find EHS Manager employers who already know the H-1B1 Chile process?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history, so you can identify companies that have successfully sponsored Chilean nationals before. Employers already familiar with the consulate-based process won't delay your offer waiting for their legal team to research the visa type, which is one of the most common slowdowns Chilean candidates face.
What documents do I need from my employer to apply for the H-1B1 Chile visa at the consulate?
Your employer must obtain a certified LCA from DOL before you can apply. You'll also need the LCA itself, a formal offer letter confirming your EHS Manager role and salary, and evidence that the position meets specialty occupation requirements. At the consulate you'll present your DS-160, the MRV fee receipt, your passport, and supporting credentials including your degree and any OSHA or professional certifications.
Can I change EHS Manager employers while on H-1B1 Chile status?
Yes, but the process restarts with each employer change. H-1B visa1 Chile doesn't carry the H-1B portability provisions that let you transfer a petition mid-process. Your new employer files a fresh LCA with DOL, and you typically need to return to the consulate in Santiago for a new visa stamp before resuming work, so factor that travel and processing time into any job transition plan.
