Align your degree to SOC codes
Pull the O*NET profile for Mechanical Engineers (SOC 17-2141) before applying. Confirm your Chilean engineering degree maps directly to that occupation, since consular officers evaluate specialty occupation fit against the stated job duties.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV prevailing wages for mechanical engineer roles in your target metro. Your offer must meet at least Level I, and knowing the tiers gives you grounded salary expectations before you negotiate.
Search H-1B1 Chile sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by occupation and location on Migrate Mate to find employers with documented H-1B1 Chile sponsorship history. This saves time targeting companies already familiar with the Chile FTA visa pathway rather than educating hiring managers from scratch.
Target employers already E-Verify enrolled
Prioritize manufacturers, defense contractors, and engineering firms enrolled in E-Verify. These employers handle work-authorization verification routinely and are far less likely to stall an offer when they learn your visa requires a consular filing rather than a USCIS petition.
Get your credentials evaluated before interviewing
Chilean engineering degrees typically require a foreign credential evaluation to confirm U.S. equivalency. Have this done before your first technical interview so you can present it immediately if a hiring manager or HR team asks about your academic background.
Clarify the LCA timeline with your employer early
The H-1B1 visa process starts with your employer filing a Labor Condition Application with DOL, which must be certified before your consular appointment can be scheduled. Raise this with HR during the offer stage so the LCA gets filed without delay after you sign.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do mechanical engineer roles qualify as specialty occupations under the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes. Mechanical engineering consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. USCIS defines specialty occupation by degree requirement tied to the specific job duties, and engineering roles with design, analysis, or systems responsibilities meet that standard directly.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa compare to the H-1B for mechanical engineers?
The H-1B visa1 Chile visa skips the H-1B lottery entirely, which means your employer can file for you at any point in the year without waiting for an April registration window. The annual cap is 1,400 visas for all Chilean professionals combined, and it has never been exhausted. The trade-off is that H-1B visa1 doesn't allow dual intent, so green card sponsorship requires a separate status change.
How can I find mechanical engineer employers who sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas?
Use Migrate Mate to filter job listings by visa type and occupation. Most employers who sponsor H-1B visas are also open to the H-1B1 Chile pathway since the employer-side LCA filing process is nearly identical. Targeting companies with existing LCA filing history in engineering roles is the fastest way to find sponsorship-ready employers.
What documents does a Chilean mechanical engineer need for the H-1B1 consular application?
You'll need your employer's certified Labor Condition Application from DOL, an offer letter specifying your role and duties, academic credentials showing your engineering degree, and a completed DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application. A foreign credential evaluation confirming your Chilean degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's is strongly recommended and frequently requested by consular officers.
Can my employer start the H-1B1 Chile process before I finish interviewing at other companies?
No. The LCA requires a specific job offer with defined duties, a worksite location, and a wage that meets DOL prevailing wage requirements. Your employer can't file a placeholder LCA. Once you accept an offer and both sides are committed, the LCA typically certifies within seven business days, making the overall timeline from signed offer to consular appointment relatively short.
