Match your credentials to U.S. specialty occupation standards
Superintendent roles must meet the specialty occupation definition, which requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field like construction management or civil engineering. Pull the O*NET occupation profile to confirm the job zone and degree requirements before applying.
Target employers with active construction visa filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Superintendent roles by employers who have filed H-1B1 visa or H-1B visa Labor Condition Applications, since companies already familiar with the LCA process are far less likely to stall on sponsorship logistics once they extend an offer.
Request the prevailing wage level before negotiating your offer
Your employer must certify your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for the Superintendent occupation in your work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search yourself before your offer negotiation so you know the minimum the LCA must document.
Clarify consular processing timelines with your hiring manager
Unlike H-1B, the H-1B1 Chile visa skips USCIS adjudication entirely and goes straight to a U.S. consulate in Chile. Set expectations early that your start date depends on appointment availability at the consulate, not a USCIS receipt notice.
Prepare a specialty occupation evidence packet for the LCA
Employers filing your LCA need documentation showing the Superintendent position genuinely requires a specialized degree, not just supervisory experience. Gather your degree certificates, translated transcripts, and any professional engineering or construction management licenses before your employer begins the DOL filing.
Verify your employer is enrolled in E-Verify before signing
H-1B1 visa sponsoring employers must participate in E-Verify. Confirm enrollment before you accept the offer, since discovering a gap after signing creates delays that push your consular appointment further out and can affect your planned start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Superintendent role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Chile?
Yes, if the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. General supervisory experience alone doesn't qualify. The O*NET occupation profile for Superintendent lists job zone requirements that help confirm whether the specific role your employer is offering meets USCIS's specialty occupation standard.
How is the H-1B1 Chile visa different from H-1B for Superintendent roles?
The H-1B1 Chile visa has no lottery and no USCIS petition filing, which means your employer avoids the April registration window and the unpredictability of lottery selection. Processing goes directly to a U.S. consulate in Chile. The trade-off is that H-1B1 doesn't carry dual intent, so your nonimmigrant intent must be clear at the interview, and the visa is issued in two-year increments rather than three.
How do I find Superintendent employers who will sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Superintendent roles by employers with verified Labor Condition Application filing history, which is the strongest indicator that a company has already navigated the sponsorship process. Construction, infrastructure, and facilities management firms that have filed LCAs for project management or field supervision roles are your highest-probability targets.
Can I switch employers after arriving in the U.S. on an H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes, but you'll need a new LCA certified by DOL and a new H-1B1 visa issued at a U.S. consulate for the new employer. There's no portability rule like there is under H-1B, so you can't begin working for the new employer on the strength of a pending filing. Plan for a consular appointment gap between roles if you're considering a move.
What documents does a Chilean Superintendent typically need for the H-1B1 visa interview?
You'll need the certified LCA from DOL, your employer's job offer letter specifying the specialty occupation and wage, your degree certificates with certified translations if they're not in English, and any Chilean professional licenses relevant to construction or facilities management. The consular officer assesses both specialty occupation eligibility and nonimmigrant intent at the same appointment, so supporting documents that demonstrate your ties to Chile also belong in your packet.
