Verify your degree field matches the role
H-1B1 visa requires a specialty occupation, so confirm that your degree in business administration, management, or a related field directly supports the Administrative Assistant duties your employer will list on the Labor Condition Application.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating salary
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Administrative Assistant roles in your target city. Your offer must meet or exceed the DOL wage level, and underpaying disqualifies the LCA before it's ever filed.
Target employers already filing LCAs for office roles
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with active H-1B1 Singapore LCA filing history for administrative and clerical positions. Companies already familiar with the process move faster and are less likely to stall on paperwork.
Ask HR whether the company uses E-Verify
E-Verify enrollment isn't required for H-1B1, but employers who already use it for I-9 compliance are more comfortable with the sponsorship documentation process, which reduces delays on your start date.
Get your LCA certified before scheduling your interview
DOL must certify the Labor Condition Application before you can apply at the consulate. Confirm your employer has submitted and received LCA certification, then book your U.S. Embassy appointment to avoid rescheduling.
Prepare your O*NET occupation profile for the interview
Consular officers assess whether Administrative Assistant roles meet specialty occupation criteria. Print the O*NET profile for your specific job code and bring documentation showing your role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Administrative Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. A general administrative assistant role may not qualify, but a role requiring a bachelor's degree in business administration, management information systems, or a closely related field can meet the specialty occupation standard. Your employer must document the degree requirement in the Labor Condition Application and be prepared to explain it at the consulate.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa differ from the H-1B for Administrative Assistant jobs?
The H-1B visa1 Singapore visa has no lottery, processes at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore rather than through USCIS, and the 5,400 annual cap has never been fully used. The H-1B requires a USCIS petition and is subject to an oversubscribed lottery. For Singaporean nationals in administrative roles, H-1B1 is faster and more predictable than waiting on H-1B selection.
How do I find employers willing to sponsor H-1B1 Singapore visas for Administrative Assistant positions?
Use Migrate Mate to search for employers with verified H-1B1 Singapore LCA filing history in administrative and office support roles. Many companies will sponsor but don't advertise it, so filtering by actual filing data gives you a more accurate picture than relying on job posting language alone.
Can my employer file the H-1B1 paperwork after I've already started working remotely from Singapore?
Yes. The Labor Condition Application can be filed while you're still based in Singapore. Once DOL certifies the LCA, you schedule your consulate interview in Singapore and receive the visa stamp before traveling to the U.S. to begin employment. You don't need to be in the U.S. during the employer's LCA preparation.
What happens if my H-1B1 Singapore visa expires while I'm still employed in the same Administrative Assistant role?
You'll need to renew at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore or at a consulate abroad during a trip outside the U.S. Unlike H-1B, there's no USCIS extension petition filed from within the country. Your employer prepares a new LCA for each renewal period, and you'll need to attend another consular interview to receive the updated visa stamp.
