Verify your degree field matches the role
Consulting is broad, so the specialty occupation test depends on whether your degree field aligns with the specific engagement area. A finance degree supports economic consulting; an engineering degree supports technical advisory roles. Mismatches between your credential and the job description are a common denial trigger.
Use O*NET to frame your specialty occupation case
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your exact consulting title before your employer drafts the job description. The profile shows the required education level and knowledge domains, giving the consular officer a clear specialty occupation anchor tied to your degree.
Target firms with existing H-1B1 Singapore filing history
Firms that have sponsored H-1B1 Singapore nationals before already know the consulate-only process and won't confuse it with the H-1B lottery. Use Migrate Mate to filter Consultant roles by employers with documented H-1B visa1 Singapore sponsorship history before you apply.
Ask your employer to certify the LCA before your interview date
The DOL must certify the Labor Condition Application before you attend your consulate interview. Build at least two weeks of LCA processing time into your start date negotiation so your employer isn't rushing the filing after you've already scheduled your appointment.
Clarify project-based versus salaried employment upfront
Many consulting roles involve client-site rotations or project billing structures. The H-1B1 Singapore visa requires a bona fide employer-employee relationship, so confirm with your employer that your offer letter reflects a direct employment arrangement, not an independent contractor or third-party placement structure.
Negotiate your start date around consulate wait times
Unlike H-1B, the H-1B1 Singapore visa is adjudicated at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, not by USCIS. Appointment availability can shift seasonally. Build at least four to six weeks between your expected consulate interview date and your proposed start date to absorb any scheduling delays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, provided the specific consulting position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. General management consulting may require you to specify the discipline, such as financial consulting requiring a finance or economics degree, or IT consulting requiring a computer science degree. The consular officer evaluates the job description, not the job title.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa compare to H-1B for Consultant roles?
The H-1B1 Singapore visa has no lottery, no USCIS petition, and a 5,400-visa annual cap that has never been exhausted. For Consultant roles, that means you can apply any time of year directly at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore rather than waiting for the April lottery window. The trade-off is that H-1B1 Singapore does not allow dual intent, so green card sponsorship while on this status is more complicated.
How do I find Consultant employers who already know how to sponsor H-1B1 Singapore visas?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Consultant job listings by employers with verified H-1B1 Singapore sponsorship history, so you're targeting firms that have already navigated the consulate-only process. This cuts out time spent educating HR teams about the difference between H-1B1 Singapore and the H-1B lottery.
Can my employer place me at a client site while I'm on the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Client-site placements are permissible, but your employer must remain the bona fide employer of record throughout the engagement. Third-party staffing arrangements where a separate company controls your day-to-day work create compliance risk. Your offer letter and LCA should reflect the actual worksite location, which may need to be updated if your client assignment changes.
What happens to my H-1B1 Singapore status if my consulting project ends early?
If your employment ends before your H-1B1 Singapore petition expires, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart the United States. Your new employer must file a fresh H-1B1 Singapore petition before you begin work, since status is tied to the specific employer named in your approved petition.
