Map your degree to the role
Developer Advocate positions require a degree in computer science, engineering, or a directly related technical field to qualify as a specialty occupation. Pull the O*NET profile for Developer Advocate roles to confirm the education benchmark before applying.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your job zone and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for Developer Advocate or Software Developer SOC codes in your target metro before you enter salary discussions.
Search verified H-1B1 sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Developer Advocate roles by employers with confirmed H-1B1 Singapore filing history. This cuts out companies that sponsor H-1B visa generally but haven't navigated the H-1B1 Singapore-specific consular process.
Target companies enrolled in E-Verify
STEM-forward tech employers required to use E-Verify are already set up for compliant work authorization onboarding. For a consular visa like H-1B1 Singapore, E-Verify enrollment signals the employer has immigration infrastructure beyond a one-off hire.
Get the LCA certified before your interview date
Unlike H-1B, there's no USCIS I-129 petition for H-1B1 Singapore. The employer files the LCA with DOL, and you present the certified copy at your consular interview. Confirm your employer understands this sequence early in the offer stage.
Prepare a technical portfolio demonstrating specialty knowledge
Consular officers assess whether Developer Advocate work genuinely requires a specialty degree. Bring documentation of technical depth: published API documentation, conference talks, or open-source contributions that show your role goes beyond generalist marketing or community management.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Developer Advocate role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Singapore?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related technical field. The role must demonstrate that specialized knowledge is a baseline requirement, not a preference. Developer Advocate positions at software or API-driven companies typically meet this standard, but roles framed as marketing or community management without a technical degree requirement may not.
How does H-1B1 Singapore differ from H-1B for Developer Advocate candidates?
H-1B1 Singapore skips the lottery and USCIS petition entirely. You apply directly at the consulate in Singapore once your employer's LCA is DOL-certified. The annual cap is 5,400 visas and has never been exhausted, so timing isn't driven by registration windows. The trade-off is that H-1B1 doesn't allow dual intent, meaning you can't simultaneously pursue permanent residence while on H-1B1 status.
How do I find Developer Advocate employers who have sponsored H-1B1 Singapore before?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with documented H-1B1 Singapore filing history, so you're not cold-pitching companies unfamiliar with the consular process. This matters for Developer Advocate roles because many smaller tech companies sponsor H-1B broadly but haven't worked through the Singapore-specific LCA and consulate pathway before.
Can my employer file the LCA and get consular approval quickly for a Developer Advocate role?
DOL typically certifies an LCA within seven business days of submission. Once certified, you can schedule your consular interview in Singapore. Processing at the consulate is generally faster than USCIS petition adjudication, and most straightforward Developer Advocate cases with complete documentation are approved at the interview window without administrative processing delays.
What documentation should I bring to prove specialty occupation at the consulate?
Bring your certified LCA, the job offer letter specifying the technical degree requirement, your academic transcripts and degree certificate, and evidence of your technical work such as published documentation, code repositories, or recorded technical presentations. The consular officer needs to confirm the role genuinely requires specialized knowledge, so concrete artifacts of your technical output strengthen the case significantly.
