H-2B Visa Physics Jobs
Physics jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship typically appear in research instrumentation, testing facilities, and scientific support roles tied to seasonal project cycles. Employers must file a temporary labor certification with the DOL before sponsoring you, and the 66,000-visa annual cap means timing your application to the correct semi-annual allocation is critical.

Tips for Finding Physics Jobs
Verify your role qualifies under H-2B
H-2B visa covers temporary non-agricultural positions, but the DOL must certify that no qualified U.S. workers are available. Physics roles tied to seasonal research contracts or project-based instrumentation work are strongest candidates for certification.
Pull the O*NET profile before applying
Use O*NET to confirm the Standard Occupational Classification code for your specific physics role. Employers need this code when filing the temporary labor certification, and a mismatch between your duties and the listed SOC can delay or sink the application.
Search H-2B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate shows employers with verified H-2B Labor Condition Application filing history filtered by occupation. Search physics and scientific support roles to identify labs and testing facilities already familiar with the sponsorship process.
Target the right cap allocation for your start date
USCIS splits the 66,000 annual H-2B cap into two 33,000-visa halves: October through March and April through September. File with an employer whose project start date falls clearly within one allocation period to avoid cap exhaustion in the other half.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using your specific physics SOC code and worksite ZIP code before accepting an offer, so you can flag any shortfall early.
Confirm the employer's DOL certification timeline
DOL temporary labor certification can take 60 to 90 days before the employer even files with USCIS. Ask prospective employers when they plan to submit the ETA-9142B so you can gauge whether the petition will clear before your intended start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Physics jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters employers by H-2B filing history and occupation code, so you see labs, instrumentation facilities, and research contractors that have already sponsored the visa, not just companies that might consider it. Standard job boards don't filter by sponsorship status, which wastes time on employers unfamiliar with the H-2B process.
Does the H-2B annual cap affect when I can start a Physics job?
Yes, and timing is critical. USCIS divides the 66,000 annual H-2B cap into two semi-annual allocations of 33,000 each. If your employer files for a start date in the first half of the fiscal year and that allocation is exhausted, your petition gets rejected regardless of its merit. Your employer must submit the DOL temporary labor certification roughly 75 to 90 days before your intended start date to stay ahead of cap cutoffs.
What makes a Physics role eligible for H-2B classification?
The position must be temporary and non-agricultural, with a clear end date tied to a project, season, or one-time need. Physics roles supporting seasonal research instrumentation cycles, time-limited government contracts, or annual testing campaigns fit the definition. Permanent or ongoing staff positions don't qualify, so the job posting and employer attestation must document exactly why the need is temporary.
Can I change employers once I'm in the U.S. on an H-2B visa?
H-2B status is tied to a specific employer and approved petition. Switching employers requires the new employer to file a fresh temporary labor certification with DOL and a new I-129 petition with USCIS before you begin work. Unlike some other visa categories, there's no portability provision, so a gap between approval and your start date with the new employer means you'd be working without authorization.
