Tips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Physician
Verify your medical credentials transfer correctly
Foreign medical degrees and licenses don't automatically satisfy U.S. state requirements. Confirm your credentials are recognized in the state where the role is based before an employer submits DOL certification, since credential gaps can invalidate the petition.
Target employers with temporary labor certification experience
Many healthcare facilities have never filed H-2B visa petitions for physicians because they default to H-1B visa. Focus your search on locum tenens agencies and seasonal clinics that already have DOL temporary labor certification history for clinical roles.
Search verified H-2B physician roles on Migrate Mate
Physician H-2B postings are scattered and hard to verify independently. Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship type so you can find employers actively seeking H-2B candidates for temporary physician roles without sifting through unsponsored postings.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Pull the current wage level from OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer so you can confirm compliance and avoid a certification rejection on wage grounds.
Time your application around the H-2B cap filing window
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap fills quickly, often within days of the start-of-season filing window. Your employer must submit the temporary labor certification to DOL well before USCIS opens the cap period, so confirm the employer's timeline at least four months out.
Clarify the scope of temporary need in your contract
USCIS requires the employer to demonstrate a genuine temporary need, not a permanent vacancy. Your contract should specify the seasonal or intermittent nature of the role in language that mirrors the DOL certification, or USCIS may issue a request for evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Physician jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for finding physician roles with verified H-2B sponsorship. Because H-2B physician postings are uncommon and rarely labeled clearly on general job boards, searching a platform filtered by visa type saves significant time. Focus on locum tenens agencies and seasonal healthcare employers that have established DOL temporary labor certification workflows for clinical positions.
Does the H-2B annual cap affect when I can start a Physician role?
Yes. The H-2B cap is 66,000 visas per fiscal year, split between two periods starting October 1 and April 1. Cap numbers can be exhausted within days of each opening. Your employer must file the DOL temporary labor certification well in advance of the USCIS filing window, and late submissions risk falling outside the cap. Plan at least four months ahead of your intended start date.
Can a Physician qualify for the H-2B visa given its non-agricultural focus?
Yes, if the role is genuinely temporary and the employer documents a seasonal or intermittent need. H-2B is not occupation-restricted by specialty, but USCIS scrutinizes physician petitions closely because most physician vacancies are permanent. Locum tenens placements, disaster relief contracts, and seasonal clinic staffing are the strongest qualifying contexts. The petition must show the position would not exist year-round.
What does the employer need to prove for DOL temporary labor certification for a Physician role?
The employer must demonstrate that qualified U.S. workers are unavailable for the position and that hiring you won't adversely affect the wages or working conditions of similarly employed U.S. workers. DOL will verify that the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for the occupation and location using O*NET classification data. The employer also submits recruitment documentation showing the position was advertised to U.S. workers first.
