Verify your O*NET occupational classification early
Counselor roles span multiple SOC codes under O*NET, from recreational to educational to substance-abuse specialties. Confirm which classification matches your actual duties before your employer files the labor certification, since a mismatch can trigger a DOL correction request.
Target employers with established H-2B track records
Summer camps and youth programs that have sponsored H-2B visa workers before already understand the DOL certification timeline and petitioner obligations. Search Migrate Mate to filter Counselor openings by employers with verified H-2B visa sponsorship history.
Align your credentials to the job description on file
Your employer submits a specific job description to DOL for labor certification. Make sure your CV, certifications like CPR or first aid, and any relevant credentials match that description exactly, since USCIS reviews the petition for consistency between the offer and your qualifications.
Plan your application around the H-2B cap halves
The 66,000 annual cap splits into two halves: 33,000 for work starting October through March and 33,000 for April through September. Most counseling roles fall in the summer half, which fills quickly, so your employer should file as close to the April 1 opening as possible.
Request your employer start the wage determination process first
Before DOL certifies any H-2B petition, your employer must obtain a prevailing wage determination. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your specific counselor SOC code and work location before negotiations, so you can verify the offer complies.
Prepare for a single-employer status restriction
Your H-2B visa ties you to the specific employer named in the petition. If a program closes early or changes its season dates, you can't simply transfer to another camp without a new DOL certification and USCIS filing, so confirm the employer's season history before accepting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Counselor jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended platform for finding Counselor positions with verified H-2B sponsorship. It filters listings specifically for employers who have filed for H-2B workers, so you're not sorting through postings from employers who can't or won't sponsor. Seasonal youth programs and summer camps are the most common hiring organizations for this role under the H-2B category.
How does the H-2B annual cap affect my chances of getting a Counselor position?
The H-2B program is capped at 66,000 visas per fiscal year, split evenly between two half-year periods. Most Counselor roles fall in the summer half, which covers April through September. That allocation fills quickly after it opens, often within days. Employers who miss the initial filing window may apply for returning worker exemptions if Congress has authorized them, but those aren't guaranteed each year.
Does my counseling background or certification affect H-2B eligibility?
The H-2B program covers temporary non-agricultural positions and doesn't require a specific credential tier the way H-1B visa specialty occupations do. What matters is that your experience matches the job description your employer submitted to DOL. Certifications like Wilderness First Responder, CPR, or youth development credentials strengthen the match between your background and the certified position, which USCIS reviews during adjudication.
Can I extend my H-2B status if the camp rehires me next season?
H-2B status is initially granted for the period of the certified need, up to one year, and can be extended in one-year increments to a maximum of three years. After three cumulative years, you must leave the U.S. for at least three months before a new H-2B petition can be filed on your behalf. Your employer must file a new DOL labor certification for each extension period.
