Tips for Your Head Of Technology Job Search
Quantify your technology leadership outcomes
Hiring committees for head of technology roles want to see how your decisions moved the needle. Replace vague statements with metrics like system uptime improvements, engineering team growth, or infrastructure cost reductions you directly drove.
Align your resume to board-level language
Head of technology candidates often undersell by writing for engineers, not executives. Frame your experience around business outcomes, competitive positioning, and risk mitigation rather than technical implementation details or tool choices.
Target companies in active platform transitions
Organizations moving from on-premise to cloud, or from monolith to microservices, hire heads of technology urgently. Filtering openings by company growth stage or recent funding can surface roles where your transformation experience is the primary qualifier.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists head of technology openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a technology vision for the interview
Most head of technology panels include a presentation round where you pitch a 90-day or one-year technology strategy for the business. Research the company's current stack and public engineering blog before you walk in so your vision is grounded in their actual constraints.
Negotiate scope before negotiating compensation
Before discussing an offer, clarify reporting structure, budget authority, and whether the role owns product as well as engineering. Ambiguity here creates misaligned expectations within months of starting and is harder to renegotiate than base pay.

Demand is concentrated in industries with active digital transformation programs, including financial services, healthcare, and enterprise software.

How do you become a head of technology?
Becoming a head of technology typically starts with building deep technical expertise, then moving into engineering management to develop people leadership skills. From there, you progress through director and VP-level roles where you own roadmaps, budgets, and cross-functional partnerships. Most candidates reach the head of technology level after leading multiple product or platform cycles end to end and demonstrating they can align technology decisions with business strategy.
Can you get a head of technology role with limited leadership experience?
It's possible at smaller companies or early-stage startups where the role is defined more broadly and technical depth carries more weight than years of direct management. The most effective path is to take on engineering lead or principal architect responsibilities, volunteer to own a significant platform initiative, and document the business impact clearly so your next application shows leadership evidence even without a formal management title.
What does the head of technology interview process look like?
The process typically runs across multiple rounds starting with a recruiter or HR screen, followed by a technical leadership conversation with the CTO or CEO, then a cross-functional panel with product, finance, and operations leaders. Most final-stage processes include a strategic presentation where you outline how you would approach the company's technology challenges. Reference checks at the executive level are common before an offer is extended.
