Job Summary

Clinical Nurse Educators are registered nurses who can apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. Clinical Nurse Educators apply skills and experience to ensure optimal clinician knowledge and skills through education and training in either general or specialized nursing education and/or training.

The CNE 3 Educator/Staff Developer creates and provides education, orientation and training to Operating Room staff, disseminates information, provides consultation and assistance for nursing research projects within the department. The incumbent designs and develops curricula, teaches individuals, and develops staff competency. This position is responsible for creating instructional content and training students in the Operating Room Training Program as well as other audiences within the Health System.

The CN 3 Educator demonstrates effective oral communication skills and confidently presents information in large groups, conferences, and staff meetings. The employee in this role must be knowledgeable of professional standards, practices and guidelines and is generally regarded as the subject matter expert in AORN “Guidelines for Perioperative Practice”. The incumbent writes and reviews unit policy and procedures and is skilled with applications such as Epic Op-Time and MS Office software to create, organize and analyze content in PowerPoint, Word and Excel.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
• CNOR Certification upon hire
• American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
• Bachelors Degree in Nursing
• Master’s Degree in Nursing
• Minimum six (6) years of Clinical Operating Room Nurse Experience
• Circulate a wide variety of complex surgical procedures at a Level 1 or 2 Trauma Center
• Three (3) years’ experience in the Scrub Nurse role
• Three (3) years’ experience as a preceptor, or other demonstrated experience as a nurse educator
• Ability to utilize medical and surgical terminology appropriately
• Thorough knowledge of a broad spectrum of professional nursing practices and issues
• Demonstrates accountability and professionalism
• Adapts to change in a positive, professional, and productive manner
• Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation
• Basic computer skills including the electronic medical/health record
• Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients
• Thorough knowledge of delivering clinical nursing education and training material for orientation and skills/competency learning and leadership development
• Strong interpersonal skills to provide education, training, and resources, and to develop positive working relationships with nursing staff and leadership
• Detail oriented, with proven organizational skills to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and see projects through to completion on deadline
• Strong skills in written and verbal communications to collaborate productively in a team environment with all levels of internal and external personnel and to convey complex clinical information in a clear, concise manner
• Thorough knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess moderately complex problems to develop potential solutions
• Act as a liaison to partnership facilities, assessing, developing, and implementing required education to ensure successful integration of programs

Department Overview

Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, Endoscopy, Interventional Pulmonology, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus. Surgical care is provided across the entire life spectrum, includes a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory surgical specialties, including (but not limited to: ACS Level 1 Trauma, Bariatric, Burn, Cardiac, Colorectal, Endocrine, ENT, Gynecology, comprehensive Neurosurgery, Oncologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Trauma, comprehensive Orthopedic (Spine, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Hand Trauma), Otolaryngology, Pain, Plastics, Robotics, Thoracic, Transplant, Vascular, Urology, and Uro-Gyn. Additionally, our Children's Surgery Center provides comprehensive surgical care in the full-range of surgical specialties in an age-appropriate setting.

Work Environment

Works overtime to meet operational and department needs, flexes shift to meet the educational and training needs of perioperative staff across all shifts including AM, PM, Nights and weekends. May be assigned to work at any Perioperative location across the UC Davis Health campus to meet operational needs.
