Industrial Design Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a industrial design engineer in New York?
Most industrial design engineers in New York enter the field with a bachelor's degree in industrial design, mechanical engineering, or product design from a program accredited by NASAD or ABET. New York does not require a state-issued license for industrial design engineers specifically, though those working on mechanical systems may pursue Professional Engineer registration through the New York State Education Department. A strong portfolio demonstrating real product work is the most important credential for landing roles at New York employers.
How much do industrial design engineers make in New York?
Industrial design engineers in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,030 for the lowest 10% to over $152,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire industrial design engineers in New York?
Employers hiring industrial design engineers in New York right now include GlobalFoundries, BAE Systems USA, and Eastman Kodak, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of consumer goods companies, medical device manufacturers, and global technology firms creates consistent demand across a range of product categories and industries.
Which New York cities have the most industrial design engineer jobs?
The cities with the most industrial design engineer openings in New York are Malta, Chestnut Ridge, and Endicott. New York City dominates due to its dense concentration of consumer brands, advertising-adjacent product studios, and global corporate headquarters, while Buffalo and Rochester draw on deep manufacturing and optics industries anchored by major employers like Moog and Corning.
Are there remote industrial design engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Industrial design engineering is a hands-on discipline that typically requires physical prototyping, lab access, and in-person collaboration with manufacturing and engineering teams. About 0% of industrial design engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that are remote tend to concentrate on early-stage conceptual work, research, or digital rendering rather than full product development cycles.
How can I get hired as a industrial design engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate designer role at a mid-size consumer products or medical device company in the New York City metro or Rochester area, where employers frequently hire new graduates with strong portfolios. Companies like Corning and medical device firms in the Hudson Valley run co-op and new-grad programs that accept candidates without full professional experience. Adjacent roles such as model maker, design technician, or CAD drafter at a New York manufacturing firm are common lateral moves that build the credentials needed to step into an engineer title.
Where can I find and apply to industrial design engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to industrial design engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state updated in real time. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly from each listing.
