Verify your degree meets equivalency standards
Most Professor category J-1 programs require a foreign degree equivalent to a U.S. master's or doctorate. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency before applying so hiring departments don't flag your qualifications during the DS-2019 review process.
Distinguish Professor from Short-Term Scholar programs
The Professor category suits multi-semester appointments and allows up to five years of program duration. Short-Term Scholar applies to stays of six months or less, typically for guest lectures or collaborative research visits. Clarify your intended teaching duration before the department contacts a designated sponsor.
Target departments with existing sponsor relationships
Many adjunct roles go through universities already partnered with a designated sponsor such as IIE or Cultural Vistas. Ask the international office directly whether they hold an active sponsoring agreement before accepting any teaching offer.
Search for J-1-aligned adjunct roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. academic departments and institutions that have posted adjunct openings with J-1 sponsorship noted. Filtering by visa type saves time and surfaces host employers whose international offices are already set up to support the process.
Negotiate DS-2019 timing before your contract start date
Your host institution must submit documentation to the designated sponsor weeks before your program start date. Build at least four to six weeks of lead time into your offer negotiation so the sponsor can issue your DS-2019 before you need to apply for the visa at a U.S. consulate.
Confirm your home-country ties before applying if the two-year rule applies
The two-year home residency requirement applies to many J-1 Professor holders, particularly those funded by their home government or whose field is on the skills list. Consular officers routinely ask about family, property, and employment ties back home during your interview.

Find Adjunct Professor JobsAdjunct Professor J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Adjunct Professor roles?
The Professor category is the standard fit for adjunct teaching appointments at U.S. colleges and universities. It applies when your primary activity is classroom instruction, curriculum development, or faculty collaboration. If your stay is six months or shorter and focused on a specific lecture series or workshop, the Short-Term Scholar category may apply instead. Your host institution's international office and the designated sponsor will confirm which category matches your appointment.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an Adjunct Professor position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. The university or college where you teach is the host institution. The designated sponsor, which might be an organization like IIE or a university holding its own sponsoring designation, issues your DS-2019 form, monitors compliance, and serves as your official point of contact with the State Department throughout your program. Your department chair cannot sponsor the visa directly.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Adjunct Professors on J-1 visas?
It depends on your individual circumstances. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your home government or a U.S. government agency funded your exchange program, or if your home country's skills list includes your field. Many adjunct professors are not subject to it, but a consular officer makes the final determination. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years before changing to most other visa categories or applying for a green card.
How do I find Adjunct Professor roles where the host institution supports J-1 sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter academic job listings by visa type so you can surface adjunct openings at institutions already set up to work with a designated sponsor. This matters because many universities have international offices with established sponsor relationships, while others do not, and finding out late in a hiring process creates delays. Targeting hosts with existing sponsorship infrastructure shortens the path from offer to DS-2019 issuance.
Can I transition from another visa status to J-1 as an Adjunct Professor?
Yes, changing to J-1 status from within the United States is possible through a change of status filed with USCIS, provided a designated sponsor agrees to issue your DS-2019 and your host institution confirms the appointment qualifies under the Professor or Short-Term Scholar category. You cannot begin teaching under J-1 rules until USCIS approves the change. Some applicants choose to apply at a U.S. consulate abroad instead, which avoids the USCIS processing timeline but requires travel.
