Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Agency Owner
Align your credentials with Trainee program requirements
The J-1 Trainee category requires either a degree plus one year of related experience, or five years of work experience in your field. Document your agency management background with employer letters, org charts, and performance records before approaching any host.
Distinguish your Trainee plan from regular employment
Designated sponsors scrutinize Training Plans closely to confirm the program builds skills you can't acquire at home. Structure your proposed training around agency ownership competencies, like U.S. client acquisition, regulatory compliance, and team leadership, that are genuinely unavailable in your home country.
Target host agencies with established J-1 compliance history
Agencies that have previously hosted J-1 Trainees already understand DS-2019 obligations, site visits, and SEVIS reporting. Search Migrate Mate to find agency employers who have demonstrated willingness to navigate exchange visitor hosting requirements for business professionals.
Confirm your role avoids the two-year home residency requirement
J-1 participants funded by their home government or whose country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement before changing status. Check the DOS Skills List for your country before accepting a host offer to avoid surprises at the visa interview.
Get your Training Plan countersigned before the offer finalizes
Your host agency and designated sponsor must both sign the DS-7002 Training Plan before the sponsor issues the DS-2019. Confirm the host is prepared to complete this step during offer negotiations, not after, so the filing timeline stays on track.
Verify your category with USCIS before filing
Agency ownership responsibilities can blur the line between Trainee and Specialist program categories. Review USCIS guidance on J-1 subcategories and discuss your specific duties with your designated sponsor to confirm the correct classification before any paperwork is submitted.

Find Agency Owner JobsAgency Owner J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Agency Owner role?
Most agency owner candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they hold a relevant degree plus one year of professional experience, or five or more years of agency management experience without a degree. Professionals with highly specialized skills in a narrow industry niche may qualify as a J-1 Specialist instead. Your designated sponsor determines which category applies based on your background and the host agency's training objectives.
Who actually sponsors a J-1 visa for an agency professional?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the agency where you'll work. The host agency employs you and signs the Training Plan, but the designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 form that authorizes your J-1 status, monitors your program compliance, and reports to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
How do I find a U.S. agency willing to host a J-1 Trainee?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. agency employers whose roles align with J-1 Trainee program objectives. Focus on agencies in sectors like marketing, public relations, staffing, or consulting where ownership and management training structures are well-established. Once you identify a promising host, confirm early whether they have prior J-1 hosting experience, since unfamiliar employers will need to complete additional paperwork with your designated sponsor.
Can a J-1 Agency Owner trainee hire or manage staff at the host?
Supervisory and management responsibilities can be included in a J-1 Training Plan if they directly support the exchange visitor's skill development goals. The training must have genuine educational value and not simply fill a staffing gap for the host. Your designated sponsor will review the DS-7002 Training Plan to confirm that any management duties are framed as learning objectives rather than operational necessity.
What happens to J-1 status if the host agency closes or ends the program early?
If your host agency terminates your training program before the DS-2019 end date, your designated sponsor must be notified immediately. You generally have a 30-day grace period after program termination before you must depart or pursue a change of status. Designated sponsors are required to report early terminations to SEVIS, so acting quickly protects your immigration record and any future U.S. visa applications.
