Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Performance Marketing Manager
Document your marketing credentials before applying
Gather transcripts, professional certifications, and employer letters that confirm your background in paid media, attribution modeling, or growth analytics. Designated sponsors require these to verify your Trainee or Intern program eligibility before issuing a DS-2019.
Target host employers with established training programs
Host companies must submit a detailed training plan to the designated sponsor before your J-1 is approved. Prioritize employers in adtech, SaaS, or e-commerce who already run structured rotations for marketing hires, since they're familiar with this requirement.
Match your category to your career stage accurately
The Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled in a degree program. The Trainee category fits professionals who graduated within the past 12 months or have at least one year of relevant post-degree work experience in performance marketing outside the United States.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned marketing roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter for Performance Marketing Manager positions at U.S. employers open to international candidates. This saves time identifying host companies before you approach a designated sponsor about issuing your DS-2019.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule early
Some J-1 participants from countries with bilateral agreements or who received government funding must return home for two years after their program ends. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing an offer, since this affects any future H-1B or immigrant visa plans.
Align your training plan with actual campaign responsibilities
The training plan filed with your designated sponsor must reflect the skills you'll develop, such as multi-channel attribution, paid search optimization, or conversion rate analysis. Vague plans that list generic duties get flagged during sponsor review and delay your DS-2019 issuance.

Find Performance Marketing Manager JobsPerformance Marketing Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Performance Marketing Manager role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're currently enrolled in a university program, the Intern category applies. If you've graduated and have at least one year of post-degree experience in paid media, analytics, or growth marketing, the Trainee category is the right fit. Both require a host employer and a designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019 and oversee your training plan.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Performance Marketing Manager position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 and monitor program compliance. The hiring company is your host employer. You need both parties aligned before your J-1 can proceed, which is why identifying the right host employer first is the critical step.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 performance marketing professionals?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Performance Marketing Manager roles at U.S. companies that are open to international candidates, making it easier to identify potential host employers before engaging a designated sponsor. Focus on adtech firms, SaaS companies, and digital agencies, since these employers are more likely to have the structured training programs that designated sponsors require for J-1 approval.
What does the training plan requirement mean for a performance marketing placement?
Your host employer must submit a written training plan to the designated sponsor outlining exactly what skills you'll develop during your exchange, such as programmatic advertising, multi-touch attribution, or A/B testing methodology. Sponsors reject vague plans, so the employer needs to map specific campaign responsibilities to defined learning outcomes before your DS-2019 is issued.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to J-1 performance marketing professionals?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if you received government funding, if your home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your J-1 was financed by a U.S. government program. Confirm with your designated sponsor during the application process, since this requirement blocks future H-1B filings and green card petitions until it is waived or fulfilled.
