JOB SUMMARY
Lab Overview
The Prison Education Action Research Lab (PEARL) at the University of Utah advances educational justice for people and communities impacted by incarceration. Funded by an award from Ascendium Education Group, PEARL leverages evidence-based research to change systems and reduce barriers to postsecondary education for people directly impacted by the criminal legal system. PEARL’s anchor project, the Prison Education Research Initiative (PERI), is a first-of-its-kind multi-institutional longitudinal study spanning 21+ partner colleges and universities nationwide.
Position Summary
PEARL is seeking a Senior Research Associate (SRA) with deep expertise in and professional experience with multi-site, multi-methods qualitative research. The SRA will lead data integration, synthesizing qualitative findings with quantitative data in collaboration with the broader research team across PEARL’s research portfolio. This position will work in close partnership with PEARL’s Senior Quantitative Research Associate to design and produce research that is both interpretively rich and analytically robust. Alongside Center leadership, the SRA will mentor emerging researchers and help the Lab translate findings into scholarship, research briefs, technical reports, and presentations. The SRA will work under the supervision of the Lab Director.
We strongly encourage applications from individuals directly impacted by incarceration and punishment systems.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Senior Marketing Strategist
Build a portfolio demonstrating measurable campaign outcomes
Trainee and Specialist category approvals hinge on documented professional development, not job titles alone. Quantify campaign results, channel strategy decisions, and cross-functional leadership to show the designated sponsor your role exceeds general marketing support work.
Target host employers with structured training programs
J-1 visa Trainee and Specialist placements require a detailed training plan, so prioritize companies with established exchange or rotational programs. Marketing departments at multinationals and large agencies are more likely to have the HR infrastructure to support DS-2019 issuance.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1 sponsorship-aligned roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Marketing Strategist openings at U.S. employers with documented exchange visitor history. Targeting employers already familiar with host obligations shortens the DS-2019 coordination process significantly.
Confirm the 2-year home residency rule before accepting offers
Some J-1 Specialist placements trigger the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), depending on your country of origin and program funding. Resolve this before your DS-2019 is issued, since it affects future H-1B visa or green card eligibility.
Align your DS-2019 training plan with your actual strategic duties
Designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas or AIPT require your training plan to match your day-to-day responsibilities. If your offer letter describes brand strategy and go-to-market leadership but your training plan lists general marketing tasks, expect revisions before the DS-2019 is approved.
Verify the host employer's SEVIS compliance standing early
Before signing an offer, ask whether the employer has hosted J-1 exchange visitors before and whether they understand host obligations under SEVIS. Gaps in employer familiarity with reporting requirements are a common reason DS-2019 processing stalls after an offer is accepted.
Senior Marketing Strategist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Senior Marketing Strategist role?
Most Senior Marketing Strategist placements fall under the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you've completed a marketing degree within the past 12 months or have under one year of post-degree work experience. Specialist applies if you have at least one year of experience and recognized expertise in a marketing specialty, such as performance marketing, brand strategy, or integrated campaign management.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a marketing role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE issue the DS-2019 form and oversee program compliance. Your hiring employer is the host organization. They commit to the training plan and workspace, but the designated sponsor holds the legal sponsorship responsibility and monitors your exchange program.
How do I find Senior Marketing Strategist roles open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. employers with a history of hosting exchange visitors in marketing and strategy functions. Because J-1 host arrangements require employer cooperation on training plans and SEVIS reporting, targeting employers already experienced with exchange visitor programs reduces friction and speeds up DS-2019 coordination after you receive an offer.
Does the J-1 two-year home residency requirement affect marketing professionals?
It can, depending on your country of origin and whether your program receives U.S. government or home-country government funding. Marketing roles funded through a government grant or exchange agreement are more likely to trigger the requirement under INA Section 212(e). If the requirement applies, you'll need a waiver before you can change to H-1B or immigrant visa status, so confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before your DS-2019 is issued.
What should a J-1 training plan include for a strategic marketing role?
Your training plan, submitted to the designated sponsor, must describe specific learning objectives tied to your marketing specialization, not a general job description. For a Senior Marketing Strategist, this means detailing phases around market analysis methodology, campaign architecture, performance measurement frameworks, and cross-channel strategy development. Vague plans citing only broad marketing duties are routinely sent back for revision before the DS-2019 is approved.
