Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Medical Assistant
Verify your clinical credentials transfer correctly
Foreign medical assistant credentials vary widely by country. Before applying, confirm that your training documents, clinical hours, and any national certifications are translated and formatted to match U.S. employer expectations for the Trainee or Intern category.
Target host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and large multisite clinic groups are more likely to have worked with designated sponsors before. Direct your search toward healthcare systems that already appear in DOL training plan filings or have hired J-1 Trainees in allied health roles.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter Medical Assistant positions at employers who have a track record of hosting international exchange visitors. Targeting these employers cuts the time spent educating hiring managers about the J-1 Trainee process from scratch.
Confirm the host employer will sign your training plan
The J-1 Trainee category requires a detailed training plan co-signed by the host employer and the designated sponsor. Lock in written employer commitment to this document before accepting any offer, since some smaller clinics back out at this stage.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
Medical Assistant positions funded by your home government or tied to graduate medical education programs may carry a two-year home residency requirement. Verify your individual situation with the designated sponsor issuing your DS-2019 before committing to a host placement.
Use O*NET to align your job description with SOC codes
Designated sponsors and host employers must justify that your duties match recognized occupational categories. Pull the Medical Assistant profile from O*NET and cross-reference it with the duties listed in your offer letter to avoid misclassification during sponsor review.

Find Medical Assistant JobsMedical Assistant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Medical Assistant role?
Most Medical Assistant candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they have completed their training abroad and have at least one year of post-graduation work experience, or under the Intern category if they are currently enrolled in a degree or diploma program. The Trainee category is more common for credentialed clinical support staff entering U.S. healthcare settings.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Medical Assistant position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the hiring employer. The hospital or clinic where you work is the host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your program compliance, and signs the required training plan alongside the host employer.
How do I find Medical Assistant host employers open to J-1 arrangements?
Migrate Mate lets you search Medical Assistant roles at U.S. employers with a history of hosting international exchange visitors, which saves you from cold-approaching employers unfamiliar with the J-1 process. Focus on larger healthcare systems, academic medical centers, and federally qualified health centers, which are more likely to have existing relationships with designated sponsors.
Is there a cap or lottery for J-1 Medical Assistant programs?
No. The J-1 visa has no annual cap and no lottery, which makes it substantially more predictable than H-1B for planning a U.S. clinical placement. Program availability depends entirely on whether a designated sponsor approves your training plan and whether a qualifying host employer has an open position for the duration you need.
What is the two-year home residency requirement and does it affect Medical Assistants?
The two-year home residency requirement means some J-1 holders must return to their home country for two years before changing to most other visa categories. It applies when your program is government-funded or falls under a skills-shortage designation. Medical Assistant positions do not automatically trigger this requirement, but you should confirm your individual situation with your designated sponsor before accepting a host placement.
